Lewis F. “Pete” Meriweather, 81, of Wessington, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ohnstad officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery, Miller with full military honors. Visitation was held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 19, 2010 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Reck Funeral Home in Miller.

Lewis Meriweather was born April 28, 1928 to Lewis and Vada (Walker) Meriweather in Oswego, Kansas. He attended school in Hallowell, Kansas.

On November 7, 1946 Pete entered the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War, receiving the Korean Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal, United Nations Medal and the China Medal. He was honorably discharged on October 6, 1954.

Pete married Marjorie Hagen in Sisseton, SD on December 20, 1952. Throughout his life, they lived in Sisseton, SD, St. Paul, MN, Wessington Springs, SD, Scottsbluff, NE, Miller, SD and Wessington, SD. For a short time Pete worked as a jeweler/watchmaker, owning a store in Wessington Springs. Pete and Marge later moved to Miller, SD and owned and operated a hardware store. He also worked as a car salesman and at a gun store.

Pete loved to go hunting, fishing and collecting guns. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the VFW, American Legion, and NRA.

Left to carry on his legacy are his wife, Marjorie Meriweather of Wessington, SD; son, Mark (Lisa) Meriweather and grandson, Conner of Sioux Falls, SD; uncle and aunt, Norm and Margo Meriweather of Miller, SD; aunt, Doris Meriweather of Miller, SD, sister-in-law, Lois Fawler of Dallas, TX; and five nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Leah and Harold Pence and brother-in-law, Charles Fowler.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Pete's arrangements.
