Harvey Dean Lafferty affectionately known as “Harvey Beans” was born February 28, 1961 in Mobridge, South Dakota to Henry Lafferty Sr. and Florence (Iron Lightning) Lafferty. His maternal grandparents were the late Grant Sr. and Molly (High Elk) Iron Lightning. His paternal grandparents were the late Art Lafferty and Gertrude LaPointe. His siblings are Ruby Shore, Henry Jr. (Pee Wee), Gertrude (Gertie), Molly Ann (Deceased), Henrietta (Hank), Norma, and Joe.

Harvey was born with Muscular Dystrophy and was given a short life expectancy. However, Harvey and our mother formed a lifelong bound with nurturing and care that blessed his siblings and all that were a part of his life for 57 years.

Harvey was a one of a kind individual. He was a pure and simple man. He is best known for his humorous personality, witty comments, sassy attitude, and occasional “salty” language. Harvey had a teasing way about him and always had a sly grin or a big smile that followed his teasing remarks.

Harvey was never one to complain of his challenges in life. His character and heart was one of being no different than others. He held his own no matter who was in his life. He was known to take advantage and prank those who attempted to treat him any less. He always had the last laugh and made those around him laugh as well.

Harvey was inspirational to many who shared his life. He was one who never stressed, never wanted for more than he had, he was happy, content and never had a bad attitude towards anyone or anything. He inspired those with challenges and had an uplifting approach to life.

In his heart, mind and spirit he was a proud Lakota man. He was proud of his culture, traditions and he was especially proud to be a part of the Wakinyan Maza tiospaye. His pride is evident in his brother Joe teaching him the ways of our people and dancing with him. He established his own reputation in dancing with numerous individuals on the pow wow circuit and with many relatives and friends who remember him as a dancer.

Harvey’s legacy is represented by the many people who shared countless stories of humor, laughter, silliness and good times with him. His reputation was known far and wide and people were constant when inquiring of his whereabouts and well-being.

Harvey is survived by his siblings Ruby, Henry Jr., Gertrude, Henrietta, Norma and Joe. Harvey celebrated his life with numerous nephews, nieces, relatives, friends, ministry, health and living assistance care givers.

Special recognition is acknowledged to LifeQuest staff and the Gamble Home resident personnel, in Mitchell, SD. The family of Harvey is deeply appreciative of the care, well-being and love provided to our dear brother.

A special expression of gratitude is given to the Mathis family for their genuine interest and acceptance of Harvey as one of their own.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I have known Harvey for a few years now. He was a proud man. Proud of his Native heritage, proud of his family and friends, proud of the staff that supported him at LifeQuest. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him. Harvey once told me, I reminded him of his mom. I was both humbled and honored. You will be forever missed, Handsome Harvey.

  2. I had the joy of working with Harvey when he lived at the Blaalid House in Mitchell. Every day that I came in to work with him I never left with a frown on my face. I will always remember his teasing and asking if I wanted a ‘knuckle sandwich’. Thanks to Harvey I learned many amazing things about his culture and family and his pride and love in both. He was a truly genuine person and I will greatly miss his huge smile, his fun ‘fist bumps’, and his hugs. God Bless his family and know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.

  3. Very sorry for your loss! Harvey always so quiet when he came to visit with Uncle Pinky and always had many smiles. Very glad Mom and Robyn were there with you all! You all are in our thoughts and prayers!
