July 28, 1917 ~ January 18, 2010
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg with Father Jerry Kopel officiating. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Gettysburg. Visitation was held from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 20, 2010 with a 5:30 p.m. prayer service at the church.
Rose Marie Griffith was born early on a hot humid morning, July 28, 1917 to Will and Ella (Rock) Griffith in the family home near Spencer, Iowa. When she was seven months old, she moved with her parents and older brother to her Grandparent’s (Anthony Rock) farm north of Gettysburg. This was to be her home until she married.
Rose attended rural schools near her home, except for the time after the school burned and she went to the Catholic school in Hoven and Polo. She graduated from the Gettysburg High School as the Valedictorian in 1935. After one year at Northern Normal Teacher’s College, Rose taught in Potter County country schools for six years.
In 1938, she met William Goebel at a dance. They became engaged and then married on November 26, 1940. Rose and Bill raised their family of nine children in Gettysburg. They farmed most of their working lives. The farm is now owned and operated by their sons Dean and Phil Goebel.
Rose was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg all of her adult life. She was active in Altar Society, holding various offices and volunteer jobs. Rose was CCD Principal and taught classes for over 14 years. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Ladies Extension Club, Birthday Club, and the Gettysburg Senior Center where she enjoyed lunch with her many friends in later years. Rose had a wonderful way of organizing many of her children’s Prom dinners, Mardi Gras lunches, and bazaar church dinners with ease. She was known for her hospitality, kindness and loving manner.
Rose enjoyed reading and watching television, especially the Lawrence Welk shows. For Rose, reading and reciting poetry was one of her favorite pastimes. She read poetry at the Oahe Manor for many years and she could still recite many poems that she had learned throughout the years. Other hobbies that she enjoyed were crocheting, baking and sewing. She was known for her many loaves of homemade bread and her delicious “Goebel” soup. Her true passion in life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her sons: Dennis (Sharon) of Aberdeen, Dean (Pam) and Phil (Aleta) of Gettysburg; daughters: Bonnie (Roger) Hagenlock of Pierre, Mary (Donn) Quiett of Gettysburg, Barbara (Winston) Forred, and Cathy (Donnie) Vetch of Aberdeen; twenty grandchildren: Jason Goebel, Virginia Beach, VA, Sara (Brad) Thorstad, Aberdeen, Steven Hagenlock, Lawrence, KS, Jon (Michelle) Hagenlock, Chamberlain, Ron (Sarah) Hagenlock, Tea, Julie (Dave) Kilian, Jeff (Andrea) Goebel, Justin (Sarah) Goebel Gettysburg, Jerrid (Cami) Goebel, Sturgis, Michael (Kim) Goebel, Mark (April) Goebel, Gettysburg, David (Anne) Quiett, Elk Point, Jennifer (David) Larson, Katie (Tony) Larson, Gettysburg, Chris (Heidi) Forred, Ben (Renee) Forred, Aberdeen, Alex Forred, Minneapolis, Jason Vetch, Stephanie Vetch, Allison Vetch, Aberdeen; thirty-two great grandchildren; two sisters: Julia McKillop, Ventura, CA, Teresa (Louis) Bunk, Gurnee, IL, one brother, Edward Griffith, Rapid City; three sisters-in-law: Helen Goebel of Gettysburg, Edna Goebel of Minneapolis, and Marian Goebel of Brookings and a multitude of loving nieces and nephews.
