Helen Goebel, 94, of Lebanon, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at her home.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg with Fr. Jerry Kopel officiating. Burial followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Gettysburg. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 31, 2010 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Helen Francis Atkins was born May 10, 1915 to George and Effie (Congor) Atkins. She grew up in the Gettysburg area, living on several different farms with her family. In 1934 Helen graduated from Gettysburg High School and went to work at the Gambles Store until she married Ray Goebel on February 20, 1939.

They lived north of Hoven, north of Gettysburg and southeast of Gettysburg until buying their current home place in 1948.

Helen was active in the REA Club and helped Theresa Kirby operate the bookmobile. She had a love for arts and crafts and spent her summers gardening and helping Ray and the boys. In her spare time she took care of her flowers and grandkids; making sure they got to Catechism and swimming lessons. Both of which were typically done with all nine kids in her 1978 Ford pickup heading to Lebanon.

Helen is survived by her five sons: Jim (Barb) of Leola, Larry “Sam” (Karren), Jerry (Linda), Lee, and Dale all of Lebanon; 13 grandchildren: Deb (Ken) Krogstad, Rick Goebel, Sandra (Keith) Jung, Boz (Melissa) Goebel, Tammy (Terry) Nelson, Bob (Angela) Goebel, Kenny (Theresa) Goebel, Tony (Jenessa) Goebel, Jenny Butler, Teresa (Mike) McGuire, Naomi (Ed) Herman, Matt Goebel and Dave (Allison) Goebel; 28 great grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; nieces, Bea (Pete) Tanner of Gettysburg and Kaylene Thorntson of South Carolina and one nephew, Bob Atkins of Washington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray, one great grandson, Jace Goebel, three brothers and one sister.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Helen’s arrangements.
