Ruby was born April 29, 1929 in Wessington Springs, S.D. to Carl and Esther (Bannick) Knigge. She had six sisters and four brothers. She went to elementary and high school in White Lake. Ruby attended Normal School in Aberdeen; there she met Clark’s sisters, Marles and Mildred. She went home with them on the weekends and there she met Clark. She married Clark Parmely on February 18, 1950. To this union five children were born. Ruby was an active partner on the farm. She milked cows, fed bottle calves, cared for the sheep and chickens, and tended a huge garden.

Ruby was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of The Order of the Eastern Star. Many life time friends were made during the weekly meetings at TOPS. After they moved to town, her greatest thrill was baking pies and cinnamon rolls for the community. She cooked and baked pies for the sale barn, Apco and Smiley’s.

Clark and Ruby enjoyed traveling with friends to horse pulls and to various places across the United States and Canada. They also attended grandkids’ sporting events, rodeos, and music activities. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, whether it was feeding them lunch or just hanging out.

Grateful for having shared her life include her children: Ronny (Jan) Parmely of Brookings, Lonny (Jeanny) Parmely of Buffalo, Kevin (JoLynne) Parmely of Huron, Trudy (Terry) Stevens of Miller, and Scotty (Katie) Parmely of St. Lawrence; sixteen grandchildren: Chad (Stacy) Parmely, DeShawn (Jeremy) Scott, Amber (Matthew) Misar, Kaeloni (Jason) Latham, Kolby (Paige) Parmely, Billie Jo (Bill Eckles) Parmely, Dawnita Parmely, Rusty (Amber) Parmely, Jeremy (Marci) Stevens, TJ (Kathy) Stevens, Shane (Tracy) Stevens, Cody Stevens, Travis (Kayla) Stevens, Macaela Parmely, Jesse Parmely, and Callan Parmely; 32 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother: Laverne Berg, Betty Elias, Lois Wulf, and Dennis (Marcie) Knigge; brother and sisters-in-law: Lowell and Mildred Engel, Marles Dean, Margaret Starks, Genevieve Parmely, Jack and Beth Engel, Gene Swaney, Ellen Parmely; and numerous nieces and nephews.

  8. Vicki (Woodruff) and Jim Simpson says:

Our sympathy to the family of Ruby Parmely. I enjoyed seeing her again at Kayla and Travis’s wedding. It had been a long time since I had seen her, and she still had that wonderful smile. We lived close to them out in the ‘country’ and remember good times at Rose Hill Lake. Prayers to the family.

  9. Hugs to all the family.  Dad sends his and mom’s condolences.  Your parents were great friends and neighbors with our parents.  Each were there for the others and they shared a special bond. Know that we are thinking of all of you during this time of Ruby’s passing.  I’m betting she’s already making pies in heaven, cuz her pies on earth were most certainly heavenly!  Love to all.
