Pauline Benard
October 6, 1925 ~ May 14, 2010
Pauline Treichler Benard, 84, of Hesperia California and formerly of Orient, SD, passed away suddenly May 14, 2010 at her home in Hesperia, California.
The memorial service was held at 4:00 p.m. Friday June 4, 2010 at Orient Lutheran Church of Orient with Pastor Lloyd Miller of Eureka officiating. There will be a reception at the church immediately following the service. A celebration of her life will also be held in Huntington Beach, California on June 19, 2010.
She was born to Henry and Clara Treichler on October 6, 1925 in Hand County, South Dakota. Pauline attended country school in Harrison Township, graduated from Orient High School and attended Northern State Teachers College and graduated with a one-year teaching certificate. Due to the early deaths of both her mother and father, she moved back to Hand County to assist her only brother Jacob with the family farm.
On January 15, 1947 she married Harold Benard. They purchased a farm in Spring Township near Orient and remained for twenty-five years where they raised their four children. Upon their retirement from farming, they moved into Orient where Pauline became actively involved in the daily operation of the Orient Legion Café. She quickly created a reputation for her down home cooking with many traveling for miles for one of her delicious Sunday dinners. Perhaps her favorite event each year was the annual Mother’s Day Buffet with friends, family and granddaughters assisting with the tradition in which she took such pride.
Pauline was a loving and devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She cherished her family and loved being a homemaker, gardener and seamstress and opened her kitchen to many friends and relatives over the years. She patiently shared her encouragement, cooking skills and favorite family recipes with her granddaughters and most recently with her great grandsons. Out of state nieces and nephews loved to spend summer vacations on the family farm where they were welcomed and loved like her children. She was also an avid reader and a gifted writer. In 2000 she wrote a book on her family history while her granddaughter Audra assisted with the publishing. Later in life she became well known for her love of knitting and over the years many family and friends were recipients of her beautiful hand crafted gifts.
Due to health reasons, Pauline moved to California in 2000 where she resided with her oldest son David and his wife Linda in Hesperia. She spent occasional time in Huntington Beach with her two younger sons Roger and Arnie where she quickly created a new social network of friends whom she shared so many loving memories.
Cherishing her loving memory forever are her daughter Shirley Schwab of Aberdeen, her three sons Roger and Arnie of Hungtinton Beach, California and David and daughter-in-law Linda of Hesperia, California, six granddaughters, Sara Rohlfs of Bismarck, ND, Amy (Stuart) Nelson of Prior Lake, Mn, Rebecca Schwab (Mike Makens) of Sioux Falls, SD, Audra (Greg) Piorkowski of Hesperia, CA, Jessica Benard of San Diego, CA., and Lauren Benard of Hesperia, CA. and six great grandchildren.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jacob and her husband.
Our mother lived her entire life with strength and integrity, a keen mind, incredible sense of humor and the ability to show everyone she met the true meaning of unconditional love and acceptance. We will all remain forever grateful for the stellar example and legacy she has left for her children, granddaughters and great grandchildren. We love you Mom, Grandma and GG!
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Pauline’s arrangements.
