Donald C. Barklow, 82, of Highmore, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2020 at Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Donald Clair was born June 25, 1937 to Ray Erwin and Lila Belle (Lewis) Barklow at Myrtle Point, Oregon. He graduated high school in 1956 at Coquille, Oregon. Don was previously married and had two beautiful daughters, Darcie and Lacey. In 1977, Don married Sharon Bouzek in Reno, Nevada. Sharon brought five children to the marriage to complete their family. The couple lived in Myrtle Point, Oregon and later Shady Cove, Oregon. While he lived in Oregon, he worked as a tire repair man, and log and lumber truck driver. Together Don and Sharon ran Country Shades Restoration and Repair, working on antique Victorian lamps. In 1995, Don and Sharon moved to Highmore, South Dakota to help care for Sharon’s father. While in South Dakota, he worked as a truck driver and as a snowplow operator of the South Dakota Department of Transportation. He then worked and retired from Highmore Healthcare as the maintenance supervisor.
Don had several hobbies he enjoyed. Growing up on the coast, he loved to do lots of fishing and camping. In his adult years, he enjoyed boating, fishing, clam digging, snowmobiling, Elks, Eagles, Lee Valley Grange, gardening, canning salsa and spaghetti sauce, and smoking meat and sausage. He simply loved to stay busy. He built a dune buggy and loved driving it over the Oregon dunes with his friends. The best part of all his hobbies and groups he belonged to were the fellowship and potlucks. Don loved being with people and visiting. But most importantly, he loved spending time with his family. Don had a great relationship with his daughters, talking to them weekly.
His memory will be cherished by his wife, Sharon Barklow of Highmore; two daughters: Darcie (John) Gessner of Portland, OR and Lacey (Jim) Nappier of Loxahatchee, FL; four stepchildren: Terral (Vicky) Finger, Randy (Dawn) Finger, and David (Irene) Finger, all of Kennewick, WA and Susan Finger of Highmore; 20 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and two step brothers: Roy Holland of Coos Bay, OR and Dale Holland of Myrtle Point, OR.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Leola (John) Engebretson; nephew, Danny Hilliard; niece, Sharry Hilliard; stepdaughter, Julie Finger; sister-in-law, Nancy Showalter; and step granddaughters, Sarah and Naomi Finger.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Don's arrangements.

I was so sorry to hear about my cousin Donny's passing. He was my first cousin – his father was my uncle Ray, my mother's (Iris Barklow) brother. I still remember him coming to Van Nuys to visit us when I was a little girl. Our family also took many trips to Oregon to visit relatives. My brother Mike and I were both born in Portland. Unfortunately he passed away 5 years ago from cancer. My younger brother Scott lives in Idaho, and he saw the notice about Don. I also did not know that Leola Ray had passed. My mother passed away in 2014 at the age of 94. My sincere thoughts and love are with your family.
