George Abernathy, of Highmore passed away, Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at the Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller at the age of 80 years, seven months and nine days..

Memorial service were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 6, at the Church of Christ in Highmore with Rev. Max Kelley presiding. Burial will be in the Highmore City Cemetery with military honors. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 5 at the Luze Funeral Home in Highmore.

George Orlo Abernathy was March 23, 1926 at Highmore, SD to John and Florence (Kelley) Abernathy. He attended grade school in Dewey Township and Polo Boarding School thru the eighth grade and then went on to help his family with the hay bailing business. George enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 serving until he was honorable discharged on September 19, 1952. Upon returning he moved to the Black Hills where he met and married Wanda Hardy in 1953. To this union six children were born. While living in the hills he worked at the Homestake Gold Mine for 35 years retiring on August 15, 1988.

In 1990 he met his childhood sweetheart again, Lorraine Kuper and they were married March 21, 1992. They resided in Highmore and visited Lead, SD during the summer time. George and Dolly got to travel a lot until the last three years. He also enjoyed doing different crafts, fishing and spending time with his family.

George was immersed into Christ on October 9, 1994 at the Highmore Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine Abernathy of Highmore; five children: Debra (Gary) Hansen of Ruskin, FL, John of Sturgis, Neal (Dorothy) of Rapid City, twins: Noreen (Brett) King of Inkom, ID and Marlene (Larry) Fitzgerald of Nashville, TN; three stepchildren: Karl (Diane) Kuper of Tripp, SD, Marvin (Elaine) Kuper of Tulare, CA and Mavis (Joe) Fleming of Valentine, NE; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers: Kenneth (Sharon) Abernathy of Rapid City and Lawrence (Shirley) Lynch of Highmore; sisters: Katherine (Bill) Ortmeier of Watertown, Patricia (Dominic) Calvetti of Rapid City and Marlys Cermak of Highmore and many nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Wanda; one son, Ronald; four brothers: John and Joseph Abernathy and Leo and Raphael Lynch; two sisters: Charlotte Roalstad and Guen Eta Axtmann.
