August 17, 1979 ~ September 4, 2020

Justine Rae High Elk, 41, of Eagle Butte, entered the spirit world, Friday, September 4, 2020, at her home in Eagle Butte.

In compliance with the CRST Tribal Directives, a visitation was held from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2020 at the CRST Bingo Hall, Eagle Butte.

Justine Rae (JR) High Elk was born August 17, 1979, to Raylene High Elk and Daniel Yazzie at Mobridge, South Dakota. She attended school at Dupree School up until her graduation in 1997. During her High School educational career Justine had many accomplishments. Cheerleading, Science Fairs, Basketball, Prom and most importantly her attendance and completion of the NASA Skill program.

Education played a very important role in Justine’s life. From her hard work in primary school, into her high school career which eventually led to many scholarship opportunities for her college endeavors. She attended college at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD, at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT, and eventually at Oglala Lakota College where she received a degree in Science, Engineering, and Math.

Justine grew up in Thunder Butte, South Dakota with her beloved grandparents, Wesley and Imogene High Elk. Here she made many great memories not only for herself but for family members, relatives and friends as well. Her bond and relationship she shared with her grandparents was so beautiful that we all knew she was greatly affected by their passing. This relationship has given Justine the great characteristic to touch many other people’s lives that she encountered. From her childhood friends to friendships she has developed over the years, her passing has left us all with a sense of emptiness.

During many of these life achievements and adventures, Justine brought a great gift into this world. In January of 2004, Justine gave birth to a beautiful little girl, Madisyn Elaine Dubray. Justine loved and cherished her daughter so much. Being a mother was one of her greatest life’s achievements. This bond is yet another contribution to the character she was given to share with other relatives and friends.

Justine is survived by her cherished daughter, Madisyn Elaine Dubray (Casmere Dauphinais), Eagle Butte; mother, Raylene High Elk/Le Compte, Eagle Butte; father, Delano “Sandy Le Compte, Selfridge, ND; father, Daniel Yazzie and family, Kayenta, AZ; brothers, Jacob West and family, Eagle Butte, Duane West and family, Eagle Butte, Davey and Michelle West and family, Eagle Butte; Arizona siblings; sister, Randi Peacock, Rapid City; and grandmother, Faye High Elk and family.

Justine is preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Wesley High Elk and Imogene (Clown) High Elk; special friends: Cherie Lorraine Agneaux, Gracie Marshall Murray, Tom Traversie Sr. and Red Traversie.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Justine’s arrangements.
