Carol Elk Nation
May 28, 1958 ~ November 25, 2020
Carol Margaret Elk Nation, 62, of Eagle Butte, entered the spirit world Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Monument Health, Rapid City.
In compliance with the CRST Tribal Directives, a private family service will be held Monday, December 7, 2020, at All Saints Catholic Church, Eagle Butte, with a procession at 8:30 a.m. from the four-mile. Burial will take place at the Eagle Butte Cemetery.
Carol Margaret Elk Nation was born on May 28, 1958. She was the youngest child of the late Levi Elk Nation and Mary Jane Tiokasin. Carol was raised in the Thunder Butte area by her Dad Levi, Grandma Maggie Pretty Buffalo-Red Bird & Aunts Alpȟonsine Stricker-Takes The Gun and Clara High Elk. She is a member of the Wakinyan Kiza Tiospaye (Fights The Thunder Clan). Carol carried the Lakota name Pte Wašte Wiŋ (Pretty Buffalo Woman) which was passed down to her from her grandmother Maggie Pretty Buffalo-Red Bird. Now, her daughter Ashley Elk Nation, carries that name.
She was a loving Mother and successfully raised four beautiful children; her baby boy Charlie Marshall, son Derek Marshall, and daughters Rhonda Claymore and Ashley Elk Nation.
Carol graduated from Dupree Public High School in 1976. She attended Black Hills State College. In 1988, Carol worked for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe at the Property & Supply/Sanitary Landfill Program as the Business Manager. This is where she met the love of her life Tony Marshall.
While employed with the CRST, she worked in the Game Fish and Parks Department, Office of Planning and Economic Development, and Financial Services Department. Carol had great respect for Orville Mestes and learned a lot from him when she worked in the Planning Dept. He was her mentor and they had a great working relationship. She formed many great friendships when she worked in the Finance Dept.
Carol moved her family to Takini where she served as the school Business Manager for one year. Upon her return to Eagle Butte, she worked at the newly established Medicine Wheel Village. Carol worked as the Tribal Contract Specialist numerous times throughout her career. She was highly respected in the job positions she held. She was quick witted, full of information, she was not one to be messed with, she never backed down and wouldn’t sugar coat anything. Although her Contract Specialist position was rewarding, it was more fulfilling to leave the workforce and dedicate her life to caring for her grandchildren.
Carol had a special bond with her grandson, Levi James. She loved all her grandchildren, but babe Levi was her “Golden Egg”. She supported him in his bronc riding events and made sure his performance shirts and jeans were starched and pressed, so he looked sharp. You could always find her cheering him on at his riding events, basketball tournaments and football games, or helping him with his garden. She was very proud of him and encouraged him in whatever he was doing.
When she was growing up, Carol enjoyed riding horses and going to horse races with Uncle “Shorty” and Aunty Mary Stricker, nephew Troy Eagle Chasing Sr and cousin Rick Laundreaux. If you didn’t find her at the race track, she was at the softball field. For many years, she played fast pitch and traveled across Indian Country with her team. Carol aka “Stretch” played first base and was a power hitter. After retiring from ball, you could find her at the field with her seeds cheering on her son Charlie and daughter Ashley. She had a full contagious laugh and always greeted everyone, she’ll be missed.
