Jane Hottman
March 9, 1926 ~ November 26, 2020
Jane A. Hottman, 94, of Omaha, NE and formerly of Gettysburg, SD, passed away as a result of COVID 19 on Thursday, November 26, 2020 at Old Mill Rehabilitation, Omaha, NE.
A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Gettysburg Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Adel presiding.
Jane, born in 1926 in Seneca, SD, was the only child of Alfred and Alice (Clay) Dreyer. Jane graduated from Seneca High School in 1943 with honors, and then attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD. She taught at North Canton School before and after her marriage to Chalmer Hottman in 1945. They were married in Miami, FL, where Chalmer was stationed in the Navy. She later attended South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD, pursuing a degree in Home Economics. She was allowed to bring her first son, Donavon, with her to classes.
Jane was a remarkable woman who rose to whatever challenge or adventure was presented to her. She was COO/CFO partnering with her husband in managing operations that spanned over forty years including the Hottman Gas and Oil Company, Hottman Farm (cattle, buffalo, and grain) John Deere Implement, GMC dealership, Pontiac, Pioneer Seed, Hesston, Versatile, Goodyear Tires, Arctic Cat Snowmobiles, Kawasaki Motorcycles, Minnesota Paint and any other business ideas that she and her husband thought worth pursuing. She became the CEO/President in 1986 after her husband’s sudden death. In 1988, Jane sold Hottman Implement to Potter County Implement, now known as C & B Operations.
Her partnership extended to co-piloting planes; driving tractors, grain trucks and combines; herding cows, buffalos, horses, turkeys and more. Beyond her business acumen, she was an extraordinary cook and housekeeper. She willingly set an extra plate for whomever ended up on her doorstep, and the guest always left full and hoping for a return invitation.
First and foremost, Jane made God a priority in her life. Next came her family, who she loved fiercely. She also loved dancing, shuffleboard, golfing, snow skiing and entertaining. In recent years, she spent time in Bible studies with her minister, Sheri, and son, Jeffery, playing bingo, and walking miles each day. Her days were filled with prayers for her family and friends.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Farm Bureau, Elks and Moose Lodges.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Chalmer in 1986; her daughter, Jaylene, in 1951; her father, Alfred Dreyer, in 1987; and her mother, Alice Clay Dreyer, in 1926, when Jane was only four months old.
Survivors include her sons, Donavon (Carol) Hottman and Dr. Jeffery (Bridget) Hottman; her granddaughters, Megan, Heather, Jessica, and Tiffany; her sister-in-law, Corinne Martin and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church, 101 W Garfield Ave, Gettysburg, SD 57442 or the Avera Gettysburg Hospital, 606 E Garfield, Gettysburg, SD 57442.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Jane’s arrangements.

Good neighbors and friends. Thoughts and prayers to Donovan, Jeff, and your families.
I did not know this lady, but reading her life’s story in her obituary, she is worthy of having someone comment on her remarkable life. May she be enjoying eternal happiness in Heaven. I am sure Jesus was looking forward to greeting her in Heaven, and then leading her to be reunited with all her loved ones who departed before her.
To the Hottmans and all who knew and loved Jane,
She certainly was a remarkable woman and we see her spark in her son, Jeff and his three beautiful girls. May they continue to carry on her strength and determination. My heart goes out to you, Jeff, Bridget, and my sweet cousins. We know what a challenging time it is to lose someone close to you. Peace be with you all. Love, Craig and Nancy Morin
I will always remember Jane for her boundless energy, incredible smile and can-do attitude. She was a force but had a light touch. She made the world better and I am saddened she is no longer here with us. Deepest condolences to all her family.
My condolences to you that your lovely mother passed away with Covid. We were neighbors in Lebanon when I was growing up. Donavon , you were about five years younger and I babysat for you sometimes. I always loved going over to your house next to ours. She was very nice to me then and when I was an adult and worked as a nurse at Gettysburg Memorial hospital. I would visit with your Mom ( wherever we would run into one another in a small town). She was still a friendly and kind lady. I am glad she was able to live in Omaha with family. I got to know Jane beginning in 1986 when she became an insurance client of mine. I could not have eulogized her any better than Megan did. She spoke of you often in my presence Megan(I think you were her favorite). What a lady! I learned to remove my shoes when I entered her home and always be prepared when I did the insurance reviews because she was! Her grace and business sense was to be commended. At times she would tell me of someone who tried to get the upper hand on some business deal. What a surprise they got! Recently I wondered how she was doing. My condolences to Donovan and Jeffrey and your families. She left quite a legacy.
My condolences to Jane' s family. I met Jane at my grandmother's assisted living Lakeside Village. I always enjoyed visiting with her. She was a remarkable lady. Her granddaughter would always come to visit with her and they would go to the little Bistro there, around the same time as me and my grandmother. I loved hearing her stories of living in SD. My thoughts and prayers. Blessings to Jane's family.
