Norm Kostboth, 70, of Gettysburg, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2020 at his home, surrounded by his family.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg, with Pastor Jeff Adel presiding. Visitation will start at 12:30 p.m. at the church. Due to COVID, masks are required.

Edwin Norman Kostboth was born March 17, 1950 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD to Calvin Norman and Lila June (Gortmaker) Kostboth. He grew up on the family farm at the original Kostboth homestead, located five miles northwest of Canistota, SD. He graduated from Canistota High School in 1968 and went on to the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1972 with a B.A.

Norm was involved with the ROTC program and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Army. After being stationed at Ft. Sill, OK, he was honorably discharged in 1973. He moved to Sioux Falls where he worked for Sioux Falls Paint and Glass Company until 1977. In 1977, Norm moved to Wessington, SD where he began his banking career at Bank of Wessington.

On April 23, 1977, Norm married Marsha R. King in Yankton, SD. On April 22, 1979, they welcomed their son Michael Norman and later, on April 11, 1981, their daughter Amy Lynn. Norm and family moved to Miller in 1980, where Norm worked for First Bank of Miller, and in June of 1983, the family moved to Gettysburg where Norm went to work for First Bank of Gettysburg. In 1987, First Bank became Community First State Bank and Norm was named bank president in 1993. In 1998, he went to work for F & M Bank as president and continued on when the bank consolidated and became known as Great Western Bank.

Norm was a member of the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg, where he served on several boards. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, having served as past commander. He was also past president and secretary-treasurer for many years of Rotary International, a board member and past president of Gettysburg-Whitlock Bay Development Corporation, a local chairman for Ducks Unlimited, chairman of the local hospice board, a member of the Mason’s, Eastern Star, and the Yelduz Shrine, where he was past president of the Gettysburg Corvette Club. He was a member and president of the Maas foundation and received the honor of citizen of the year for Gettysburg in 2000.

Norm’s life was always his Lord, family, and the community of Gettysburg. He did all that he could to assist in the community and was there with a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye.

Norm was an avid hunter and fisherman. Some of Norm’s favorite hunting trips were the many years he spent hunting mule deer west river in Dewey County, SD. He greatly enjoyed numerous fishing trips to Keefe Lake in Saskatchewan, Canada. Norm also made numerous trips to the Sturgis Bike Rally, simply as he said as a “forward observer.” He never did own a motorcycle, but truly enjoyed having conversations with total strangers.

On December 4, 2014, Norm’s life changed drastically when he was diagnosed with an oligodendroglioma brain tumor. He underwent surgery in January 2015 and the life he knew would never be the same.

Norm’s life will be cherished by his wife, Marsha of Gettysburg; son, Michael (Mary) of Tiffen, IA; daughter, Amy (Adam) Porter of Brookings; grandchildren: Marcus Kostboth and Bennett Porter; mother, Lila Kostboth of Fremont, NE; one brother, Steven (Betty) Kostboth, Valley, NE; mother-in-law, Betty King of Geddes.

He was preceded in death by his father; father-in-law, Earl King; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Memorials may be directed to Keep Hope Local, 127 Hilltop Dr., Gettysburg, SD 57442 or Avera@Home, 801 E Dakota, Pierre, SD 57501.
