Lois Hart
April 16, 1930 ~ March 23, 2021
Lois Ellen (Burki) Hart, 90 crossed over to Heaven, Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, South Dakota.
The family will honor her life with a private celebration at a later date.
Lois was born April 16, 1930 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Amber and Lloyd King. She was adopted as an infant by Albert and Sarah (Krull) Burki. She had one brother, Wayne Burki, and five sisters: Joyce Belanger, Iris Fear, Lorna Conway, Peggy Barker, and Carol Moats. Lois graduated from Highmore High School with the class of 1948 and then went to school in Spearfish, South Dakota to become a teacher. She taught for a short time at Banner and Pratt Rural Schools.
Her early childhood was spent on a farm south of Blunt, South Dakota. When she was 10, she and her family moved to the ranch where she would meet and fall in love with a handsome young cowboy, Richard (Dick) Hart, who came to buy a couple of horses from her father. They were married in 1952 and spent their married life on that same place farming, ranching and raising six children: Leo, Teresa “Sissy”, Julie, Janet, Ben and Lori. Lois loved her home and everything that came with that, especially all aspects of the ranching and farming operation. She loved to be involved and spent most of her younger years outside working side by side with Dick and later the kids. She loved and looked after all the animals, big and small.
She held several different jobs in the community, but the most recent ones were at Thunderbird Lanes and Hokie’s Station both in Highmore where she loved the people she worked with and enjoyed so much visiting with the customers that came and went. Later in life, one of her favorite things to do was mow on her riding lawn mower. She was concerned, just a few weeks ago, as to whether or not her mower would be ready to go for this season, so we are pretty sure that Heaven will now be mowed to perfection.
Lois is survived by her son, Leo Hart of the home place; daughters: Teresa “Sissy” Hart of Highmore, SD, Julie (Shane) Cowan of Pierre, SD, Janet (Chuck) Hoss, Goodwell, OK, and Lori (Craig) Latham, Goodwell, OK; grandchildren: Jade (Brittany) Cowan, Wellington, CO, Sunni Cowan (Alex Johnson) Buena Vista, CO, Chaney (Tyrel) Larsen, Weatherford, OK, Sadie Latham, Goodwell, OK; great grandchildren: Veda & Bennett Cowan and Charlie & Waylon Larsen; sisters: Peggy Barker, Huntington Beach, CA and Lorna Conway, Anaheim Hills, CA; and she also leaves behind many cherished friends and relatives.
She was greeted in Heaven by her husband, Dick; son, Benny; her parents: Albert & Sarah and Amber & Lloyd; her brother, Wayne; and sisters: Joyce, Iris and Carol; and many dear friends and relatives. Oh, what a joyous reunion it must be.
Her final resting place will be at the cross, overlooking home, thank you to all who shared in and were part of her life.

I am so sorry for you guys loss. What can I even say other then who we are is the impression we leave on others and there are very few that left such a good impression on so many as your mom. I never saw her that she did not ask how I was doing. After moving away I always stopped at the gas station when passing through to see if she was there just to say hi. It is rare that adults take more then a passing interest in children especially ones they are not directly involved in. I would say this is the thing that set Lois apart from anyone else I have ever known. Whether one was 5, 15, 25 or 45 she always remembered you and genuinely cared about you. I cannot even speculate how many people would concur with me. Very few have touched so many as your mom. I am truly going to miss her
My heart goes out to the Hart family! Lois was such a sweet, kind lady. I met her when I moved to Highmore in 1988, and we eventually became neighbors. She will be missed dearly.
Though it is a small gesture in the sorrow of losing your loved one, know that I pray God’s comfort for you Teresa and your family. Cynthia Sampson
I’m SO very sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing and so soon after your Dad❤️ My Mom will be very sad to hear also. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you all🙏🏻
Hart family – I’m so sorry for the loss of someone so very dear to you all. She and Dick weren’t separated very long. Take comfort in the fact they are together again for all eternity. I would run into her when she worked at Hoki’s, and we always had a good visit. She was a very special lady. May your memories make your loss easier to bear in the days to come. My deepest sympathy to you.
Sincere sympathies and prayers to the family. So sorry for your loss of your parents.
I met Lois when I worked part time at Hoki’s years ago. She was the sweetest, kindest soul! I loved her like my own grandmother. My favorite memory of Lois is when I had some head/chest congestion. Lois told me to take a swing of BlackBerry Brandy and it’ll make me feel better. Well….it did make me forget about the congestion for quite a while! She will be missed but she definitely made this earth a better place while she was here!
