Ruth Monroe, 87, of Miller, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at the Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 25 at St. Lawrence Community Church with Rev. John Rasko presiding. Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Huron at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Visitations was from 3 – 7 p.m., Friday at the Reck Funeral Home in Miller with a 7:00 p.m. remembrance service.

Ruth Monroe was born June 22, 1919 to Harry and Carrie (Janssen) Hendricks at Bancroft, SD. She moved with her family at an early age to Wessington Springs, SD, where she graduated from high school in 1937 and from Wessington Springs College in 1938. Ruth taught a rural school in Jerauld County one year following college.

On July 23, 1939 she married Vernon Monroe in Wessington Springs. They farmed near Wessington Springs and in South Hand County before moving to a farm southeast of St. Lawrence in 1946. They retired to live in St. Lawrence in 1978. She moved to the Miller Plaza in 2004 and has resided at the Prairie Good Samaritan Center since May of 2005.

Ruth was active in her church’s women’s circle and was as 4-H leader of the B-Square Club for many years. She was “the egg lady” while on the farm and “the sewing lady” while living in her home. She had many close friends and neighbors to share in her life.

Ruth is survived by one son, Dennis (Cora Lee) Monroe of Kenyon, MN; three daughters: Betty (Norman) Reich of Miller, Donna (Gerald) Martian of Mobridge and Sally Monroe of Sioux Falls; two daughter-in-laws: LaRita Monroe of Hamilton, MT and Beth Monroe of St. Paul, MN; one sister: Genevieve Quiram of Huron; 16 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vernon Monroe in 1991, two sons, Russel Monroe and Jerry Monroe, and her brother, George Hendricks.

Memorials are directed to the St. Lawrence Community Church Building Fund.

    We received a call from Darlene Droz about Ruth’s death. We are with Randy and his family and Cindy and her family for Thanksgiving. Our deepest sympathies to you all. My folks have been gone now for 9 and 5 years. It makes us thankful for the memories we have. It is never easy to lose our loved ones and we can be thankful for the good times. Just know that we are all thinking of you during this difficult time.

  7. The warmest memories I have of Ruth is when all of you kids and Vernon were with her on the farm, where we as kids would play while the folks laughed and laughed. There was always a lot of warmth there on the farm. With lovng memories, I am Bob Kieser, son of Byron and Violet Kieser
