Maurine was born December 29, 1922, at Eagle Butte, South Dakota to Alvin and Elna (Bengtson) Johnson at their farm home. She lived with her parents on the homestead farm, attending school in Eagle Butte all 12 years, graduating in 1940. She attended Northern State College in Aberdeen from 1940 to 1942, graduating with a two-year certificate. Following her graduation, she taught one year at the Cheyenne Agency.

She then moved to Minneapolis, MN, and worked during the war at the Twin Cities Ordnance Plant as a secretary. On July 29, 1944, she married Dale Auchampach of Ipswich in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was stationed in the Air Force. She was employed at Kirtland Field Air Base until her husband was transferred. After his discharge, they lived in Ipswich for a short time until they moved to Brookings, South Dakota, where they resided for four years while her husband earned his degree in pharmacy. In 1951 they moved to Chamberlain, South Dakota, and in 1953 moved to Faulkton where she has since resided.

Maurine was a member of the United Church of Faulkton where she served on many boards of the church and was co-chairman of the planning committee for the new sanctuary. She was Sunday School Superintendent for many years and taught Sunday school for 20 years. She was the church secretary for eight years. She has also been active in the United Methodist Women, having held offices on the local level, and she was a district officer for eight years. She enjoyed several summers as a camp counselor.

Other activities included Care Center Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. Maurine was also involved, along with her husband, in operating Dale's Pharmacy in Faulkton for 30 years. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and visiting family and friends. Mom is fondly remembered as the “secretary of labor” for the extensive list of chores to be completed whenever family visited.

She is survived by her two sons: Thomas (Louise) Auchampach, Boise, ID, and Richard (Karen) Auchampach, Central City, SD; daughter: Jill Connelly, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; daughter, Debra Auchampach; parents; two sisters; and a son-in-law.

Guestbook

  1. We would like to extend our sympathy to the Auchampach family! Dale was a very good friend of Newell's and they enjoyed many card games along with Mag Sorenson. We enjoyed many nice visits with Maurine and Dale over the years, and now they are reunited once again. Cherish the memories as we will!

  2. With deepest sympathy at your time of lost.

  3. I’m so sorry for your loss, I just visited Maurine 3 weeks ago and she seemed to be doing fine. We talked about Debbie and Dale and I hugged her when I left. Over the last 50 years, I’ve tried to visit her whenever I was in Faulkton. She was a great lady and I’ll miss visiting her. My best to the family. Gregg

  4. So sorry about your mom. She was such a part of my growing up. She was a special person.

  6. Tom and Louise – My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I'm sure she and Lyle will continue to share memories. May she rest in Peace.

  7. So sorry for your loss. Mom and Maurine have some wonderful memories. Mom enjoyed Maurine's company at the assisted leaving in Faulkton. Thoughts and prayers for your family.

  8. Thinking of all of you and prayers to you your family. Maurice was a dear friend of my Mom’s, Donna Cassels and she always spoke fondly of her.

  9. Tom, Dick, and Jill,
I was so saddened to hear of Maurine's death (although she and my Mom, Norma, must be having wonderful times and talks up there in Heaven!! They were both such beautiful women in my mind that there is no doubt that is where they are…right back together with Dale, Ruth & Ben, and my Dad "Sparky". They had some great times together oftentimes playing cards, out at pheasant hunts, or just visiting over coffee and yummy baked goods! Maurine was just a God-send to our Mom for even when Mom was in the Assisted Living in Aberdeen, Maurine ventured out and drove all the way up there to see her! Mom thought of her as a sister, I know. I am sorry I didn't know about her death and the funeral until it was over, otherwise my sisters Kaye Anglin, Joan Bosanko, and Sharon Horning and I would have all been there. We are planting a tree in her memory and you should receive a certificate acknowledging it. A lovely lady…always in our memories! (Speaking of memories, I remember coming down to Faulkton for several 4th of July celebrations having a picnic and great fireworks! Now, that was a FEW years ago!!) God bless you all.

  10. Bless Maurine and her family. She was a beautiful lady.

  11. We are so sorry to hear of Maurine's passing.  We don't get back to Faulkton much anymore but it was always a treat to visit her when we did.  Of course growing up in a small town, we knew who Maurine and Dale were though Church, etc. But I really got to know them and the rest of the family when I started doing my internship at Dale's Pharmacy during my third year of pharmacy school.  Maurine and Dale were always very good to me and I felt I learned a lot from them that has helped me throughout my 54 years as a Pharmacist. Great memories. Maurine will certainly be missed.
