Flossie Brotherton was born October 5, 1933, to Elmer and Mamie Brotherton. Flossie grew up on a farm by Hayes, South Dakota and had to work hard on the family farm while attending country school. The family moved to a farm south of St. Lawrence.
Flossie married Orville Abbott to this union a son, Donald, was born. After Orville’s passing, Flossie and Donnie lived east of St. Lawrence.
Flossie married Harold McMurtry on October 4, 1960 and made their home in St. Lawrence. To this union three children were born: Debra, Dennis, and Dawn. Harold passed away in a truck accident on December 18, 1968. Flossie and her children continued living in St. Lawrence, raising four children on her own was never easy. Flossie started working at St. Lawrence Elementary School washing dishes so she could be home with her kids when they were not in school. When the school closed, she started working at the Hand County Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s aide and continued this until she retired a couple months short of 30 years.
She also cleaned the St. Lawrence Community Church for many years, after the new church was built, she decided to give it up. After Flossie retired, she took on mending and sewing to pass the time, putting in many new zippers and patched pairs of jeans until failing eyesight forced her to quit. Flossie loved to bake goodies, especially for her family and she enjoyed baking Christmas cookies and giving them to family and friends around the holidays.
Flossie moved to the Plaza in Miller in 2011 and then lived there until March of 2019. She then moved to the Courtyard Villa Assisted Living.
Flossie loved her family; her grandchildren were the joy of her life. She loved giving the great grandkids her quarters that she won playing bingo. The highlight of her days were always phone calls from her family.
She is survived by her children: Debra (Clyde) Coffey, Wessington, Dennis (Jackie) McMurtry, Howes, Dawn Alumbaugh, Sioux Falls; thirteen grandchildren: Trinity (Sheldon), Tim, Travis (Alona), Tyrae, Bronc (Mindy), Tori, Tia (Sheldon), Blaze, Joshua, Jared, Calita (Tony), Corde, J.R.; 22 great grandchildren; three great great granddaughters; and many nieces, and nephews.
