Roy Kathner, 86, of Miller passed away Sunday, December 3, 2006 at Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 6 at the Reck Funeral Home in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial was in Lonesome Hill Cemetery at Phillipsburg, Missouri. Visitation was Tuesday, December 5 with the family present from
5 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Roy August Kathner was born May 28, 1920 near Phillipsburg, MO to Immanuel Max & Inez Frood Allen Kathner. He grew up in this area attending school at Lonesome Hill and Flag Pond Schools. Roy attended church at Emmanuel Chapel where he partook in Sunday school and accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at the age of 13.
After his school Roy lived a brief time in Kansas City working for Aircraft Associates as a car blocker before relocating to South Dakota. On October 5, 1943 he married Alma Audra Ware. To this union three children were born. Roy and Alma moved to a farm North of Miller from 1944 to 1958 where they farmed and raised their family. While living there he attended Carlton Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher. He was also active in the relocation and rebuilding of the church building. In 1958 they moved to the Wolsey area farming there until his retirement. Alma passed away on October 30, 1968. He then married Lena Burgher DeGeest on July 10, 1970. She passed away on March 11, 1989. On November 24, 1989 Roy married Alvina Hoffman Carroll. In 2003 they moved back to Miller where he resided until the time of his death. She passed away on March 24, 2006.
Those left to cherish his life are his children: David (Sheila) Kathner of Willmar, MN, Neil Kathner of Lebanon, MO and Alan (Linda) Kathner of Faulkton; grandson: Lincoln Kathner and fiancé Quinn Swenson and great grandson, Vaughn Kathner all of Sioux Falls; granddaughter: Tricia Kathner Thompson and husband Paul of Chaska, MN; stepdaughters: Carolyn DeGeest Hood and husband Danny of Moscow, ID and Gladys Carroll Buechler of Fairfax, OK; stepsons: Tom (Marlene) Carroll and Melvin Carroll of Harrold; and numerous step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roy was preceded in death by his three wives; his parents; two brothers: Arlie Kathner in WWII and John Kathner; two sisters: Mary Hilda Kathner and Sylva Henrietta Kathner King; and two stepsons: Steve & Wilbur DeGeest.

Alan, I saw the Kathner obituary in today’s paper and decided to go the the web site to see if it was your dad. I am very sorry to see that he passed away. According to the obituary, he lived a very good life. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
