Larry A. Fernholz, 74, of Wessington, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022, at Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital, Miller.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Miller, with Father Paul Josten officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Wessington. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m., Monday, February 7, 2022, followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.
Larry was born on May 1, 1947, in Huron to Tony and Mildred (Gould) Fernholz. After graduating from Wessington High School, he attended South Dakota State University where he played varsity baseball his freshman year. After graduation he moved to Minneapolis to work for the Food and Drug Administration.
He married Niece Parmely and was blessed with 4 sons. Kelly, Chad, Brad, Danny, and stepdaughter Emily Miller. Larry returned to the take over the family farm in 1972.
Larry married Cindy Miller in 1997 and together they raised 2 grandchildren, Xavier Butler and Magnolia Miller.
Larry was proud of his beef cattle herd and calving out every spring. His best hired hand was grandson, Steven Fernholz.
Larry enjoyed sports on tv cheering on SDSU Jackrabbits, Vikings, Twins, and granddaughter Kadye playing volleyball for K-State Wildcats. He was happiest sitting in the bleachers watching his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Blessed for having shared his life, his wife Cindy; his sons: Kelly (Shawn), Chad (Jenny), Danny; Emily; grandchildren: Steven, Kadye, Spencer, Delanie, Josie, Kylee Barden, Xavier, Maggie, Alyssa (Tyler) Horn, Alexis Stevens; great grandson, Ridge; brother, Don (June); sisters: Marlys (Clair), Marilyn (Ed), Mary (Monte); many friends, nephews, and nieces, and his lifelong friend, Randy Fliehe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Brad; and sister, Donna Schiltz.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Larry's arrangements.
