Edwin Carl Hohm was born March 5, 1929, on a farm near Carpenter, SD to Edward and Elizabeth (Decker) Hohm. When he was ten years old, his father passed away. He grew up in Osceola area, attended a rural school and went to Bethel Church whenever possible. He attended school until 8th grade and then moved to Yale when he was twelve. He and his older sister, Ruth, worked to help support his mother and siblings, and he was a good example to all his siblings. He had firm beliefs, a good character and he loved the Lord.
He worked for Ernie Hofer they farmed around Yale and went south for custom combining. In the early 1950s, he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas.
He married Jean Dierkson, October 26, 1951, at Mt. Olivet Church in Huron. They farmed and he worked at Armours for several years before purchasing the grocery store in Yale. Jean ran the grocery store while he worked at the Coop. After selling the grocery store, they moved to Wessington in 1968, to run the lumberyard until he retired in 1992. After retiring, they moved into a new house that they built, and he continued building until 2012.
He belonged to the American Legion in Wessington. He enjoyed camping in the Black Hills with their friends: the Hofers and the Walters. He liked to fish for walleyes and he loved to camp. He was an avid fisherman at West Bend and Fort Thompson. Occasionally, he fished above the dam at the Oahe Dam in Pierre with his friend, Lowell Prentice.
