Gladys Davis, 89, of Highmore, died Thursday, December 21, 2006 at the Highmore Healthcare Center.
Funeral service was held at 1:30p.m. Tuesday, December 26 at the United Methodist Church, Highmore with Pastor Jenene Earl officiating. Burial was in the Highmore Cemetery, directed by Luze Funeral Home of Highmore.
Gladys M. Zemlicka was born December 28, 1916, in Northern Hyde County, South Dakota, the only daughter of Frank and Ilma Zemlicka.
She grew up in Hyde County, where she spent nearly her entire life. She was united in marriage to Roger Davis on April 4, 1936. To this union two sons were born. She and Roger celebrated 52 years of marriage.
She and her family lived in Eden Township in Hyde County until 1961 when they purchased the J.P. O’Brien farm on the west edge of Highmore. They purchased a bulk milk tank and sold milk for 10 years. They moved to 418 West Second Street in Highmore on October 19, 1972. She moved to Benson, Arizona, in October, 1997, where she lived in a home built on her son, Greg’s, property until May, 2002, when she returned to Highmore to reside at the Highmore Healthcare Center.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and Miriam Circle and served as a 4-H leader in Eden Township for six years. She was an accomplished seamstress, spending hours sewing for her family and friends. Working in her garden, working with flowers and crocheting were her hobbies.
Survivors include: her two sons: Neil (Kathy) Davis of Blunt and Gregory (Sandy) Davis of Benson, AZ; six grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Eckstein of Highmore; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Donald and Lester.
