Evelyn Diede was born November 20, 1931, at the family farm south of Highmore in Hyde County, SD. She was the oldest of four children born to Herbert and Beverly (Hatch) Diede. She attended country school and finished her education by graduating from Highmore High School in 1949.

On June 8, 1949 Evelyn married Vernon McGough in Highmore. They established their home on a farm north of Highmore. The family then moved to Fort Pierre where Vernon found work and Evelyn stayed home to care for their children. When the kids were grown, Evelyn started working as an aide for St. Mary’s Hospital and later in admissions. She dedicated 27 years to St. Mary’s before she and Vernon moved to Gettysburg in 1997 to be closer to their daughter, Janet.

Evelyn’s free time was spent crocheting, doing cross-stitch, embroidery and sewing. She was able to make all of their clothing when they were younger. During retirement, Vernon and Evelyn were able to do some light traveling and attending auctions and flea markets any chance they could! Above all though, faith and family were the highlighted blessing. They started each day praying the rosary and would spend as much time as possible, cherishing time with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Evelyn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg, Sacred Heart Altar Society where she held several offices, and also was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Evelyn is survived by her five children: V. Thomas (Rosemary) of Miller, Daniel (Gloria) of Rapid City, Janet (Erwin) Kormendy of Gettysburg, David (Debbie) of Fife Lake, MI and Todd of Sioux Falls; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Virginia Diede; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vernon in 2010; granddaughter, Bonnie Jean Hall; two brothers: Robert and Dale Diede; and one sister, Marilyn Miller.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Evelyn’s arrangements.
