Jack W. Axsom, 84, of Gettysburg, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Avera Gettysburg Hospital surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg, with Pastor Jeff Adel presiding. Burial will follow in the Gettysburg Cemetery with military honors. A prayer service will be 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 22, 2022.

Jack Axsom was born January 14, 1938 in Gettysburg, South Dakota to Wayne and Velda (Thompson) Axsom. He attended Gettysburg Public School.

He was united in marriage to Linda Bevers in Gettysburg on September 17, 1959. To this union three sons were born: Jimmie, Terry, and Rodney.

Jack served in the United States Navy and the South Dakota Army National Guard. Jack was retired from the United States Army in January of 1998, with the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8).

Jack was a believer in the Kingdom of Heaven, an American Legion member, and a past member of the Legion Color Guard. He was a Gettysburg Council Member and a former mayor of Gettysburg.

Jack is survived by his wife, Linda of Gettysburg; three sons: Jimmie (Shelly) of Rock Rapids, IA, Terry of Gettysburg, and Rodney (Carissa) of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Jim Axsom of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law, Pauline Bevers of Miller; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dora Faye (Lawrence) Glodt; sisters-in-law, Jeanita Axsom and Judith (Morgan) Brooke; and brother-in-law, Jim Bevers.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Jack’s arrangements.

  3. I have so many wonderful memories of Jack. The twinkle in his eye, his smile and laugh, and the way he loved.  Jack was a Huge man. Not in size but in presence. He would always tell you right from wrong.  Always in a good way, a learning way.  Heaven has gained a genuine man.  He will be missed.
