Julia Frances Bowar, 94, of Faulkton, SD, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at the Faulkton Senior Living.   

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 8, 2022, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Faulkton, with Father Randy Phillips presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A wake service will be 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 7, 2022, at the church with visitation one-hour prior.

Julie was born March 9, 1928, in Hand County, SD to Frank X. and Mary (Froning) Schaefer.  She attended St. Liborious School in Polo and graduated in 1946.  She graduated from Mt. Marty College in Yankton, SD.  After college, she worked in California at a jewelry store while living with her brother. 

On October 12, 1948, Julie married Robert Bowar in Polo.  They lived on a farm near Faulkton and had five children.  Julie gave piano lessons and made a quilt for each grandchild.  She was an active member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, playing the organ for many years, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, St. Thomas Altar Society, American Legion, VFW Auxiliary, and the Lakeside Country Club.    She enjoyed doing the daily crossword, playing bridge and any game with her family. 

After retirement, they moved to Faulkton and enjoyed traveling in their motorhome.  Bob and Julie traveled all over the United States and especially enjoyed the south in the winters, buying a home in Apache Junction, AZ in 1996.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her children; Larry (Cheryl) Bowar of Faulkton, Pamela (Terry) Brueggeman of Marshalltown, Iowa, Jeanette (Rick) Shamis of Williamston, SC, Nancy (Dave) Waldowski of Laguna Woods, CA and Gary (Nickie) of Faulkton; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Maylou Schaefer, Leota Bowar, and Betty Bowar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers:  Lawrence, Carl, Leonard, Bernard, and Edwin Schaefer, and two sisters: Teresa Zeller and Dorothy Zeller.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Julie’s arrangements.

  6. We were sorry to hear of Julie's passing. Bob and Julie visited us in Ohio and we had a wonderful time during their stay. Julie was such a gracious host at all family functions on the farm. From my memory Julie was one of just a few aunts that thought I (oldest nephew on the Schaeffer side) had some redeeming qualities. Find comfort in knowing she was a special part in raising a beautiful and industrious family.

  7. I am so sorry to hear about your mom. I just heard about this AM, and now saw that the funeral was this morning. I would of loved to come and see all of you. I have so many wonderful memories of your parents and your family, esp one of them;) Julie has such a nice lady, I loved spending time at the farm.
