Jack Schaefers, 94, of Faulkton, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at the Faulkton Senior Living. 

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 3, 2022, at St. Liborius Catholic Church, Polo, with Father Randy Phillips officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Polo.  Rosary and wake service will be at 6:00 p.m., Friday, September 2, 2022, at St. Liborius Catholic Church, Polo.

Jack was born February 25, 1928, to John T. Schaefers and Louisa (Bowar) Schaefers in Faulkton. He was the youngest of five children, growing up on the family homestead north of Polo. He attended St. Liborius Grade School and graduated from Fairview (Polo) High School in 1947.

He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1952. Following a medical discharge in July 1952, due to a four-month hospitalization with Rheumatic Fever, he returned to help his father on the family farm. On October 25, 1954, he married JoAnn O’Meara at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Faulkton. They were blessed with 10 children living on the family farm, until they moved to Faulkton in 2018. 

He was an active member of St. Liborius Parish and in multiple organizations within the Polo Community. He served as a local and state officer in the Polo American Legion and Polo Knights of Columbus for many years. (Jack often was called ‘Mr. CDA’). In 2011, they received the State KC Family of the Year Award. 

Memories of Jack will be treasured always by his wife of almost 68 years, JoAnn; his children: Colleen (Cory) Leer, Faulkton, Doug (Darla) Schaefers, Polo, Camille Dunnick, Sioux Falls, Dean Schaefers (Dee), Colleyville, TX, Delmar (De) Schaefers, Anchorage, AK, Carole (Jeff) Stoecker, Onaka, Doyle Schaefers (Nubia), Keller, TX, and Darwin (Cristi) Schaefers, Sioux Falls; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Joyce Wickersham and Janet Johnson; brother in law, Tom (Carolyn) O’Meara; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Darry and Dale in 1984; two grandsons: Toby and Mitch; sisters and brothers-in-law: Dorine (Willy) Venjohn, Sally (Huck) Bushfield, Kay (Max) Martinmaas, Genny (Kenny) Locke, and Carol Jean Steele.  

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Jack's arrangements.

    Very sorry to hear about Jack. I'm sure Darry and Dale were there to welcome him Home.
    I will never forget his laugh. It was usually after giving me some kind of heck, but nonetheless, he was usually laughing when I was around him! He was good at that!
    He lived a good long life. Now, we all need to celebrate for being a part of it.

  15. We are saddened to have lost Jack. He and Karl with jokes and fun personalities had such fun together. Especially their famous dance at Nick & Laceys wedding. We still laugh about that. In phone calls Karl always asked Jack "When can we dance again" Just one of the few memories to share. We will miss him and our hearts are with Joanne and all the Schaefers.
