Faithe Luella (Crossman) Schultz was born February 22, 1933, in Wessington, daughter of Donovan and Stella (Miklethun) Crossman. She lived on a farm southwest of Wessington until 1937 when the family moved to Miller. Luella attended grades K-12 in Miller, graduating in 1951. She attended South Dakota State College in Brookings for three years and then began teaching at a rural school in Hand County and one year in the Rapid City school system. In the fall of 1963, she began teaching the sixth grade in Miller and, by attending night classes, she received a four-year teaching degree from Huron College in 1966. After a total of 36 years in the teaching field, she retired in the spring of 1992.
On February 21, 1962, she married Donald “Casey” Schultz. They lived their entire married life on the same street in Miller Luella had been since 1940. They were not in the same house but in the house next door.
The greatest love of her life was helping others to learn how to swim. She was the Miller city lifeguard and swimming teacher for fifteen years and continued giving lessons in their back yard pool through 2020. History was very important to her and she had kept a personal diary since January of 1947. She also liked gardening and yard work and was a great supporter of the Miller School system and our town. The Crossman Hatchery was her grandparents’, Arbie and Mabel Crossman, original business and was later owned by Casey; it was a source of great pride for Luella until her husband closed the business at the end of 1994.
Luella and her family attended the Miller Presbyterian Church beginning in 1937. Luella was confirmed and joined the church on December 7, 1947. She served as elder, trustee, as a memorial committee member, and a member of the bell choir. The bells used in the bell choice had been given to the church in memory of the Crossman family. Luella and Casey helped make the banners and decorate the sanctuary for many years. She was a charter member of the inner light group, belonged to the Miller Community Garden Club, and the Historical Society, and was on the Miller Housing Committee. She kept the names of every graduate or anyone who attended Miller School from 1904 until the present day.
Luella and Casey have never spent a Christmas apart and this year will be no different.
Luella is survived by her cousin, Leon Crossman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Casey; parents; and three sisters: Leota, Donna, and Sonja.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Luella's arrangements.

Luella taught at Golden Shield country school before she went to teach in "town". She taught me (if I remember right) 1st to 3rd grade at Golden Shield. Of all the teacher I had she was my favorite. Sorry to hear of her passing.
My sincere sympathy to the family of Luella Schultz..🙏🙏
Sending prayers for family and friends. Mrs. Schultz was my 6th grade teacher. She was a kind, caring, woman, who remembered her students. When I'd go back to Miller to visit my family, when she saw me, she'd always hug me and call me by name and ask how I was doing. She'd talk to me about my grandchildren, she knew them because they live in Miller.
She was such a beautiful soul. Loved by all.
So sorry for your loss, she was a fun lady
I adored Lulu, even though she threw me out of the pool many times for going into the deep end without having passed a swimming test. She was beautiful, deeply tanned and seemed to have been born with a whistle around her neck. I think of her as part of Miller, and always will.
She will be missed. She was a great lady. Loved kids wanted them to succeed. She was a great swim teacher, we had the privilege to take lessens in their beautiful pool. Casey and Luella were a awesome couple.
Very sorry to hear this. She was a great teacher. She will be missed in the Miller community. Prayers to all.
Mrs. Schultz was my favorite teacher and she always impressed me with how she followed all the sports in Miller. I’m certain she has left an incredible legacy with everyone she knew and taught! I was one of the lucky ones!!
My Dad told stories about playing basketball against Casey and how good of athlete he was. I sat at many basketball games by these two great supporters of the Miller Rustlers. Always a friendly hello, how are things in Highmore conversation. We would have a little rivalry going, cheering for the Rustlers and Pirates. People like these are hard to lose in a community and I send condolences to all.
Luella was the "mother hen" of our school class. She kept track of all of us and spearheaded the reunions that we had.
Memories of visiting as a young girl, Luella and Casey, Luella's parents, and Crossman Hatchery with my parents-(Kenneth & Joyce Crossman- Luellas's cousin). Being with Luella always brought so much fun and joy. We kept in touch and we're thankful they both died in the Lord and we'll meet again in the glories of heaven. Love to the family.
