Alice E. Buchheim, 96, of Highmore, went to be with her Savior on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at Highmore Health in Highmore, with her family by her side.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore, with Rev. David Peterson and Rev. Shari Schwedhelm, officiating.  Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 24, 2023, followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.   Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Highmore, at a later date.

Alice Elizabeth Cherland was born August 17,1926 to Ole and Mary “Nellie” Cherland at home in rural Hyde County.  She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith, attending Edwin Church and later Sedgwick Church, both located in North Hyde County.  Family church attendance was very important to them.  With a tap on the knee, Alice could quickly quiet the entire pew of children.

On May 27, 1948, she married Harold Buchheim.  They made their home just 4-1/2 miles from her home place.  While there, Alice stayed busy raising hundreds of chickens and chasing their 8 children (2-1/2 dozen aka 2 boys and 6 girls).  She became certified and licensed to sell 1000s of Grade A eggs.  She stayed actively involved in the church, serving as Sunday School and Bible School teacher, and held a variety of positions in the women’s group.  She was also a member of the Happy Hour Club and the Countryside Garden Club.  She took much pride in being State and Regional chairman of the Smokey Bear and Woodsey Owl poster projects.  Alice served as the president of South Dakota Federation of Garden clubs; this role provided the opportunity to travel across the United States.

Never time for idle hands, as she was always busy making sure there was fresh baked bread as the children arrived from school.  Alice was well known for her raised glazed doughnuts which, in the spring, she generously provided for neighborhood bull sales.

She always had the coffee pot on with fresh baked treats to go with it.  Everyone looked forward to Alice’s fried chicken as it was a favorite at the annual 4th of July picnic and outdoor worship services, which the Buchheim’s hosted.

Alice was a dedicated correspondent, providing the Sedgwick News for the Highmore Herald for over 40 years.

Living only ½ mile from the Illinois School, which all 8 children attended, she occasionally filled in as substitute teacher, acted as custodian, and hauled drinking water for the students daily.

Her affiliation with the garden club inspired Alice to have an annual Flower Display for residents at the Highmore Nursing Home to enjoy, along with her famous frosted coffee ginger cream cookies.

To not only be a true queen to her children, Alice was honored as Old Settlers Queen in 2008 and Highmore Senior Snow Queen in 2018.

It is impressive that a self-taught crocheter has her crocheted items displayed in several surrounding states.   She always seemed to have doilies available to give to anyone who stopped by to visit.

Left to carry on her legacy are her 8 children: Mary (Mike) Thorson, Linda (Joel) Boschee, Shirley Morton, Elmer (Shelly) Buchheim, Gladys (John) Volek, Marilyn (Junie) Krick, Melvin (Betty Ann) Buchheim, and Thelma (Rex) Hirsch; 16 Grandchildren; 31 Great Grandchildren; and 1 Great-Great Grandchild due to arrive this spring.

Greeting her in heaven are her parents; husband; son-in-law, Tim; great grandson, Digger; and all of her and Harold’s brothers and sisters.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Alice's arrangements.

  4. Dear Family,
We are sorry to hear of the loss of your mom. I remember her Garden Club Days and Smokey the Bear contests. She would have me judge posters. Alice gifted me with many of her doilies as well as a little angel key chain which I still carry with me in the bottom of my purse. I call it my lucky travel charm. Her devotion to family and church the devotion of her family in seeing to her care set the bar very high.
I saw Alice on Christmas Day with her daughters. She was graciously smiling. She will be missed.  ♥️

  8. Gordon and Cynthia Sampson says:

Such good memories of a great lady and her gift of hospitality. So enjoyed the 4th of July picnics hosted by Harold and Alice, watching the Old Settler’s parades on the front lawn at the house in town, the holiday circle meetings.  She made a body feel special and loved. She has taught her children that same graciousness.  A life well lived. Thanks for being such a special aunt.

  9. Hugs and prayers to Alice's family. A special lady who lived a special life. God Bless.

  10. I so enjoyed visiting with Alice and her daughters at the nursing home. She will be missed. Thinking of all of you.

  11. Such a sweet and special lady. Always made you welcome and happy to be arround. She will be missed here but there is so much joy in Heaven welcoming her into family arms.

  12. We were so sad to learn of Alice's passing. She lived a long life and did it so graciously and lovingly. Alice became a friend through the South Dakota Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. (SDFGC). Her leadership as our State President from 1992-1994 gave her the opportunity to travel around the country representing SD. She also loved serving as our Smokey Bear Chairman for many years as it gave her contact with school aged children. Alice was so dedicated to the SDFGC that she became a member-at-large after the Highmore Town and Country Garden Club disbanded. The SDFGC will make a donation in Alice's name to the the SDFGC Scholarship Fund at South Dakota State University. Happy Gardening, Alice! We'll miss you.

  13. Just learned that Alice had passed.  Sincere condolences to all of the Buchheim family.  Great example of a life well lived.

  17. Peggy (Eckstein) Koskie says:

I will always remember 4th of July fireworks at the Buchheims. What a fun time! And, of course, there were the other get togethers in northern Hyde county including oyster stew suppers, card games, etc. Alice was such a warm and loving person. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

May the memories bring you comfort!
