Gerald Duane Schmautz, 82, of Harrold, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at his home.

Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 25, 2023, at the Harrold School Gym, Harrold, South Dakota, Chaplin Brita Bergeson, officiating.  

Gerald Schmautz was born August 8, 1940, in Glen Ullin, North Dakota to Rueben and Edna Schmautz.  Gerald was raised in the Glen Ullin, North Dakota area where he attended country school.  The family then moved to Lead, South Dakota in 1956.

Gerald held many different titles, with his favorite being a husband to his bride, Shirley, of 61 years.  He was a father to his five children and a grandpa who loved nothing more than spoiling all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Aside from his love for his family, Gerald was always the first one to lend a helping hand, from driving bus to helping his children/grandchildren with the best deals on the car lot.  Gerald positively touched the lives of people in different communities and was a true believer who trusted in the Lord.  Gerald will be truly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, Harrold; son, Duane (Lori), Pierre; son, Dale (Rhonda), Belle Fourche; daughter, Scarlet (Dean) Becker, Harrold; son, Tim (Jackie), Pierre; son, Danny (Liz), Ft. Pierre; sisters: Renee (Larry) Chitwood, Sioux Falls and Nancy (Kurt) Klunder, Black Hawk; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and a very special friend who is considered part of the family, Dustin.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents: Rueben and Edna Schmautz; infant sister, Karen; sister, Diane Gray; brother-in-law, Harley Gray; daughter-in-law, Carol Schmautz; brothers-in-law: Gaylord and Ray Edwards; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Edwards. 

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Gerald's arrangements.  

A Memorial Service was held on May 25, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Harrold Auditorium, 102 S. Nixon Ave in Harrold, South Dakota 57536

    I am so sad to hear of Gerry's passing. I always loved talking with him, always so kind. We were so grateful for him driving the school bus route in Highmore. He will be missed.

  7. He was such a kind man, my kids loved him as their bus driver on the Thunder Butte Route. Always knew they were in safe hands. He will be missed. Hugs and Prayers of comfort to his family.
