Alphy Auwarter Zaucha, 90, passed away, Monday, January 8, 2007 at her Colorado Assisted Living Home in Littleton, CO. A memorial service will be held this summer in Britton.
Alphy E. Smith was born on a farm near Amherst, SD, July 15, 1916 to Lloyd and Carrie Smith. She graduated from Amherst High School where she met Gene Auwarter. They were married December 21, 1936. They bought a farm S.E. of Amherst where their three children, Sharine Knapp of Centennial, CO, Virgene Wagner of Faulkton, SD and Carmen Auwarter of Monument, Co were raised.
Alphy and Gene were square dance callers in Britton and surrounding areas in the 1950’s and president of the Callers Association in 1958. Alphy is remembered for her tap dance teaching in Britton, Claremont, Pierpont and Langford. She filled the Britton Auditorium with her tap dance reviews for several years. She had sewing projects going all the time from formals to leisure suits (polyester the fabric of choice).
Six years after Gene passed away, Alphy married John Zaucha in December 1971 and resided in Sun City, AZ for 31 years. She loved the warm climate of Arizona and did a lot of sewing for neighbors and costumes for her husband’s band. She spent summers with her children while John was in Chicago on business. John passed away in 2001. In 2002 Alphy moved to Colorado to be near her family. She like going to the Congregational Church on Sundays, eating out, shopping and being with her family. On Christmas day her Great Grandchildren did a fashion show of her wearing clothes that she had made many years ago.
Alphy was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star and the infamous, Charm Circle. She kept her family and friends in stitches with her funny stories and games.
Besides her three children, she is survived by one sister, Betty Beckwith; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gene and second husband, John; her parents; two sisters and two brothers.
A memorial has been set up for her at Porter Hospice Foundation, 7995 E Prentice Ave, Suite 204, Greenwood Village, CO, 80111.
