Robert Peterman

Robert Peterman, 85, of Miller, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Highmore Health.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 21, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church, Miller, Pastor Robert Brooks, officiating.  Burial will follow at the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  

Robert was born November 2, 1937, in St. Lawrence, South Dakota to Harlan “Harley” and Eva (Wilson) Peterman.  He was the youngest of nine children.  He spent his childhood in Burdette, South Dakota and completed his grade school education in the Odessa country school.  

Robert lived and worked with his father on the family farm until his deployment with the US Army, where he was stationed in Alaska until his honorable discharge in August of 1967.  

Robert married Shirley Sell on March 22, 1963 at the Hand County courthouse in Miller, South Dakota.  They were days away from their 58th wedding anniversary when he lost his soul mate.  To this union four children were born; Barbara, Bruce, David and Gary.  

Robert worked as a farm hand until he and Shirley moved to Miller in 1978.  Robert worked at Chipman Implement and as an employee of Hand County until his retirement.  

Robert enjoyed his morning coffee stops where he would visit and deliver his version of humor to whomever would listen.  He took pride in his lawn care at his home as well as helping to maintain the cemetery north of town.  He had a kind heart and a soft spot for the grandkids and the great grandkids.  His day was a little bit better when they would call or visit. He loved to watch old western movies, baseball games, and an occasional football game.  He spent many hours in his garage creating his wooden flags.  The best ones were made from wood that he salvaged or was donated for him to work with.  

He spent many hours during the holidays playing cards with family.  The banter during those card games will be missed. Many stories were told and memories were made during those games of pitch. 

Robert rarely missed an opportunity to attend a pheasant hunt, deer hunt, or to just shoot gophers in his spare time.  He loved to be included in the hunts so he could participate and visit with family and friends. 

Thankful to have shared his life are his children: Barbara (Lawrence) Weidenbach, Bruce (Shannon) Peterman, David (Dawn) Peterman, and Gary (Colleen) Peterman; grandchildren: Kristina (Blake) Sweeter, Daniel Weidenbach, Michael Weidenbach, and Colin Weidenbach, Amber (Brock) Dufek, Ryan Peterman, Lane Peterman, Jaycee Peterman, Cody Peterman, Colton Peterman, Miranda (Josh) Krumm, Dillon Peterman, Hayden (Constance) Peterman; great-grandchildren: Kirby Sweeter, Kolsen Sweeter, Kinley Peterman, Kyler Dufek, Jameson Krumm, Breanna Krumm, Ella Peterman, and Hailey Peterman; sister, Mildred Metz; and brother, Darrell Peterman.  

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Peterman; parents: Harlan and Eva; and siblings: John, Ruth, Vera, Walter, Thelma, and Helen.
