Marjorie Irene Mitchell was born near Highmore, SD on November 18, 1929, to Andy and Elizabeth (Gussler) Gortmaker.  They moved to Hand County in 1930 and Marjorie attended school there.

Marjorie married Roy Mitchell on March 4, 1949, at the Presbyterian Church at Miller.  Marjorie was employed at the Green Lantern Café, Haugen’s Grocery, and City Meat Market and then, in 1976, Roy and Marjorie purchased Zen’s Locker.  They ran the locker until they sold out in 1987.  She then went to Good Samaritan Society in Miller until she retired in April 2000.

She belonged to the Witty Gals Card Club for many years and had many wonderful, adventurous memories with them.  She was a Girl Scout Leader and also helped organize the Miller Fire Department Auxiliary and was the president for many years.

Roy and Marjorie enjoyed camping and fishing in their free time, but Marjorie’s greatest memories and time well spent was always with her family.  Attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities were the highlight of her days.

Marjorie is survived by her daughters: Bonnie Younkin and Beverly (Dennis) Russell; grandchildren: Brenda (Frank) Zepp, Gina King, Vickie King, Jason (Cassi) Russell, and Jamie (Nichole) Russell; great grandchildren: Joshua Rittel, Tyler (Holly) Rittel, Zack (Sierra) Lindblad, Asia King, Jacob (Taylor Waltz) Russell, Caitlin Russell, and Miranda Russell; step grandchildren: Wyatt Zepp, Tyler Schinderling, and Kayla Henson; great great grandchildren: Royce King Williams and Novah Rittel; brothers: Garry (Joanne) Gortmaker and Rodney (Mary Jo) Gortmaker; and sisters: Genevieve Parmely and Sindy Schmidt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; parents; sisters: Sharry Gortmaker, Ethel Deuter, and Charlotte Burgher; brothers: Donald Gortmaker, Tony Gortmaker, James Gortmaker, and Chuck Gortmaker; and great grandchild: Chance Casey.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Beverly, I remember your mother. She was always very nice. I recall the slumber parties/sleep-overs we had. It can be so hard to lose your mother. I wish you peace in her passing, and know that she will always be watching over you. Some of my sisters still say they get messages from my mom, who passed almost 2.5 years ago. Your mother was a blessing. May she rest in peace and may you find comfort in the little things people do around you during your time of grief.
