Steve Hancock, 82, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Avera Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 24, 2024, at the St. Ann Catholic Church, Miller, Deacon Roger Puthoff, officiant. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Miller.

Leonard “Steve” was born to Ivan and Hazel (Palmer) Hancock on March 31, 1942, in Miller, South Dakota.  Steve had many trades throughout his life, including working at Wilson Ready Mix, Armours, and as a lift driver for Sathers. 

He loved many things, but a few hobbies were wine making, meat smoking, fishing, hunting, and bird watching.  Steve’s favorite pastime was when he was able to watch his son, Rick, drag race, which started when Rick was fourteen years old. 

Steve will be missed by his wife, Linda; children: Richard (Patti), and Jailey “Sandi” (Randy) Thompson; grandchildren: Erica, Tosha, Ashley, David, Kayla, Hilary, MaKenna, and Rikki; and five great grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons: Darwin and Bradley.  

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Leonard's arrangements. 

A Funeral Service was held on May 24, 2024 at 10:30 AM at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 709 East 4th St. in Miller, SD 57362
A Graveside Service was held on May 24, 2024 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Located 3/4 mile west on West 5th St. off Hwys 45/14 (N. Broadway) in Miller, SD 57362

  1. Grew up with the Hancocks in Bigelow. Steve and Linda raised a great family. Steve was a hell of a mechanic and cook. He caught us one time watching dirty TV on their satellite and instead of getting upset… he sat with me and Bradly and watched with us! Our deepest sympathies Linda Jaley and Rick. We love and miss you all❤️❤️❤️

  3. Sorry for your lose Linda and family. Steve and I were good friends in our teenage years. Over the years we grew apart but I still considered him a good friend of mine.

  4. Sorry for your loss. Remembering Steve (Linda) from bowling at Merry Lanes here. AND the time the crew lined the lanes with pumpkins for Breck to clean up as Daryl instructed even though he had nothing to do with it. Thinking good thoughts through memories.

  5. Linda and family so sorry for your loss! Lots of memories have been going through my mind. Steve had a special smile & laugh. I remember him butchering a snapping turtle we brought him he was so excited. Always busy. Always willing to help. Bigelow has lost another piece of our little town.
