Daniel J. Beringer, 85, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Gettysburg and Hoven, SD, passed away at his home in Mesa, AZ, peacefully surrounded by hospice, family and friends.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 23, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg, with Fr. Brian Simon presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Daniel Joseph Beringer was born September 8, 1938, in Hoven, SD to Frank and Gertrude (Schmidt) Beringer. He attended grade and high school in Hoven, graduating in 1956. Dan then joined the army receiving an honorable discharge in 1958 and served in the army reserves for six years. Following his military discharge, Dan attended barber school in Sioux City, Iowa, and worked part time at the mortuary there. Upon his graduation, Dan returned to Hoven where he worked for a short while with his father, and then he partnered with Clair Maroney in Gettysburg.
Dan married Silvia Simon of Hoven and together they raised four sons. He was proud of the Gettysburg community and all he could do to make it the best place it could be. He was joint owner of the East Side Drive-In for three years and of the Keg and Que for three years, was active in the Jaycees, Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he sang in the choir, spent 15 years as a volunteer coach for little league and Legion baseball, and enjoyed watching sports and hunting. Dan received many awards after serving on committees such as the city auditorium renovation, centennial events, athletic complex, jamboree and Am. Legion. Dan was a lifelong singer and entertainer and especially liked singing in barbershop groups in the area.
In 1988, Dan married Mona Jensen, and they could always be found singing at various functions and monthly shows at the Oahe Manor. They loved to dance and golf and were co-chairmen, with Rod Perman, on the grass greens project, a huge success. In 2011 Dan and Mona moved to Mesa, AZ, jumping right into music and various activities making wonderful friends along the way. He was always up for cards and table games and took great joy and pleasure in being with friends and family. He loved bocce ball, shuffleboard, pickleball, of course golf, and even tv sports.
How Dan enjoyed the many pinochle games with Bill and Donna Zweber, the ice cream runs and road trips with the Kiplinger's, Pegs and Jokers with Forsyth's fast-food trips and weekly cards with Perry and Jean Hall, the Larrington’s, Gary Oaks, Rita, and Bonnie. He even liked cutting hair in Arizona and taking John Raine to the pool. He just loved people and making them laugh. He talked about his memories of singing with his nieces while doing dishes. At Peggy Williams' suggestion, Dan wrote his "memoirs about the years on main street”. He bought the shop from Clair, but even after Clair moved to Arizona the pranks and jokes continued. This made the barbershop a "happenin" place to be, and at noon the buddies would show up for cards. "Clipper Dan, Dan the Barber Man" will long be remembered and loved deeply. He made the world a better place just by being in it!
Left to cherish the memories and mourn his death are his wife of 35 years, Mona; sister, Bette Schaefer of Hoven; sons: Monte, David (Shawn), Wayne, and Chris (Andre`); grandchildren: Dani Moe, Will Beringer (Kira), Patrick Perrault (Aleah), Leah (Karen), and Andrew Beringer; daughter, Taryl Jensen; son, Eric Jensen (Phuong Lynh); grandchildren: Kierre (Sierra), MaiLynh Jensen, VyLynh Jensen; great grandchildren: Kinsley Jensen, Taytum Jensen, and Phoebe Perrault; and many nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Frank; three brothers, Bill, Jim, and Jack; sister, Doris Zweber; brother-in-law, Ray Zweber; brother-in-law, Albin Schaefer; Robert newborn son of Bette and Albin Schaefer; and stepson, Jay Jensen in 2014.
