Wanda Jane was born January 4, 1932, to John and Beulah (Wilson) VanDenBerg in Pennington County and moved back to Hand County in 1941, where she attended country school and went to high school in St. Lawrence.
On January 12, 1950, Wanda married Gene Stevens in Miller. To this union, four sons and one daughter were born: Merle, Ellen, Dean, Terry, and Neil. Gene and Wanda raised their family on various farms in southwest Hand County, eventually moving to St Lawrence in 1991.
From a young age, Wanda was active on the farm and at an early age worked beside her dad. Later in life, she helped Gene and her children on the farm with many chores. Wanda was an excellent cook and accomplished seamstress. She was especially known for her caramel rolls, fudge and chocolate cakes. Wanda cherished her time with her children, grandchildren and families.
Music was a significant part of Wanda’s life. At an early age, starting in grade school, Wanda and her sisters were widely known for singing at numerous funerals and other events throughout most of their life. Wanda was involved in the ladies’ extension groups, an active member of TOPS, served on the Miller School Board for several years and a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church. She sang in the church choir for many years and was active with other church functions. Wanda loved her church life along with her church family.
Grateful to have shared in her life are her four sons: Merle (Karon) Stevens of Wessington Springs, Dean (Judy) Stevens of Huron, Terry (Trudy) Stevens of Miller and Neil (Sandra) Stevens of Miller; grandchildren: John (Lorie) Stevens of Wessington Springs, Jeremy (Marci) Stevens of St. Lawrence, Lance Hosman of Stickney, TJ (Kathy) Stevens of Wessington, Brian (Amy) Hosman of Sioux Falls, Shane (Tracy) Stevens of Gettysburg, DeNeil (Glenn) Hosman of Pierre, Jessica (Eric) Oolman of Orange City, IA, Cody Stevens of St. Lawrence, Casie Stevens of Miller, Andrea (Matt) Jones of Miller, Travis (Kayla) Stevens of Miller and Clate (Jessica) Stevens of Miller; 34 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren, two sisters Anita Fremark and Beryle Sessions, brother-in-law, Don Carl; and one sister-in-law, Jerene Stevens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; daughter, Ellen; son-in-law, Don; daughter-in-law, Deb; parents; two adult sisters; Dephane, and Sharon; an infant sister; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the First Presbyterian Choir or the Courtyard Villa Assisted Living.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Wanda’s arrangements.

So sorry for your loss my thoughts and prayers are with all the Stevens Families. Wanda and I had so many good times and some not so good! She gave Lynn so many hair cuts and of course the Stevens children always entertained him! I could never make good gravy, so Wanda taught me how! And so many memory's I can't recall all of them… Sorry I could not be there, but I watched all the services and memory pictures. Such a nice remembrance for Wanda.
We are sorry for your loss. We remember both Wanda and Gene with sympathy and respect.
Hello
We are saddened to hear of Wanda’s passing. I know that she was not only a cousin to my mom Ella but a good friend too. I always remember mom saying Wanda collected Angels. So every time I see an angel it reminds me of her.
I remember as kids and my brother Kevin and I got to ride the horses when we came to visit on summer vacation.
The picture I have attached is from May 2024 of me (Pam), mom (Ella), dad (Vic), and Tim and Gayle Tescher. This was just before mom and dad moved into the Lodge.
