Kermit Garter, 78, of Dupree, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. 

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. MDT, Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Dupree Multi-Purpose Building. Burial will follow in the Dupris Family Cemetery, rural Eagle Butte. A wake will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the multi-purpose building with a procession from the 2-Mile east of town at 4:00 p.m. 

Kermit Moses Garter Sr. was born on November 14, 1946, at the Old Cheyenne Agency in South Dakota to Moses and Amy (Counting) Garter. He attended school in Dupree and, in his younger years, enjoyed bull riding and working various ranch jobs. Over the years, he was employed with Dupree CRH Maintenance and also worked as a carpenter for First Dakota.

Kermit is survived by his wife, Lois of Dupree; his children: Devon, Kermit Jr., Kent and Kandi Garter; step daughters: Dalynn Morrison, Darcy Slides Off, and Doreen Standing Bear; grandchildren: Josh, Annie, Armondo, Elias, Amber, Kori, Precious, Deleon, Jessie, Deidra, Mary, Angel, and Rex; 16 great grandchildren: brother, Sam Eagle Boy; and sister, Wilma Traversie. 

To greet him were his baby girl, Valaeda Ann; his parents: Moses and Amy Garter; and sisters: Irene, Maggie and Flora Garter. 

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Kermit’s arrangements.
