Delbert Chasing Hawk, 75, of Ft. Yates, ND, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Ft. Yates IHS Hospital, Ft. Yates, ND. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. CDT, Friday, July 11, 2025, at the Little Eagle Blue Gym. Burial will follow in Elkhorn Congregational Cemetery, Little Eagle. Wake services will be at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 10, 2025, at the gym, with a procession from the bay area at Grand River Casino, Mobridge at 4:00 p.m.

Delbert Neil Chasing Hawk was born December 2, 1949, in Little Eagle, SD to Leo and Lizzie (Tree Top) Chasing Hawk. At a very young age, he and his brothers were involved in dancing and riding horses. Del and his brother Everette did a lot of shows for tourists at Fort Lincoln during the summers. He did a blanket dance act that went very well with the crowd. He also took part in the Custer Drama Show, being Sitting Bull’s son. Delbert owned his first horse at eight years old and grew up on a horse. Later, he would travel with the Rodeo Far West show in Italy, France and Switzerland. Delbert also participated in rodeos as a young man. 

Being a good athlete, he led the Little Eagle Golden Eagles to an undefeated season in his eighth-grade year. He later took his talents to Fort Yates, where he and his teammates, Dean Little Dog, Jim Gross, Bob Eagle Staff and his brother Everett, took the Warriors to the 1969 North Dakota State Basketball Tournament. 

Delbert was a Head Start teacher for fourteen years, and he worked at the Prairie Knights Casino for four years.

Delbert is survived by his wife, Darlene (Martinez) Chasing Hawk, Ft. Yates, ND; daughters: Michelle Chasing Hawk, Bismarck, ND and Marjorie Mae (Frank III) Driver, Ft. Yates, ND; sons: Joe Good Elk, Wakpala, SD, Neil Chasing Hawk, Eagle Butte, SD, Burton and Brad Little Dog, Little Eagle, SD; and Delbert Wayne Chasing Hawk, McLaughlin, SD; stepchildren: Deirdra Zephier and Colin Walk, Ft. Yates, ND; grandchildren: Ronald Jr. and Samuel Long Feather, Roshelle Marie, Frank Francis IV, Brandon Brice, Darrius Dylan, Liberty Love, and Kitai Kay Driver; step grandchildren: Zaylise, Xaivon, and Kaistin Rainbow, Chasiti, Chat’ka, and Carter Agard and Laurellee, Kolleen, Kristine, Colton, and Colin Jr. Walks; brother, Everette Chasing Hawk; adopted sister, Maggie Chaska; nieces: Wilma (Hosea) Albarado, Billie Jo Helper, Juanita, Judy, and Joanne Standing Crow; and one nephew, Leo Standing Crow. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Walter Chasing Hawk; sisters, Fern Standing Crow and Maryann Helper; and one granddaughter, Emily Driver. 

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Delbert’s arrangements.

  2. Delbert was a true friend and great basketball teammate. Delbert was always caring, honest, and hard working. He was a person who you liked to be around. He never complained about things that needed to be done. Delbert never had a bad word about anyone. I know you will still be shooting that corner baseline shot. Now, they will be counted as a three point shot.

I have fond memories of Uncle Delbert when we would come to Little Eagle for visits, my Grand Father was Mike Tree Top Sr., I loved riding horses, he taught me a lot I am sorry to hear of his passing, I remember the rodeos just out side of Little Eagle, he almost talked me into getting on a young bulll, I will have some good memories of Uncle may you rest in peace ,he is now in good company with our grandmas and grandpas who left before him.
