May 17, 1943 ~ September 8, 2025

Grant Walter Johnson, 82, of Highmore, SD, went to be with the Lord on September 8, 2025, in Oklahoma City, OK, after a brief illness and surrounded by family.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore with Wayne Brock officiating.  A visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.  A luncheon will follow at Willow Creek in Highmore.

Grant was born on May 17, 1943, in Glendale, CA, to Charles and Marguerite Johnson (Langley).  In 1961, at the age of 17, Grant joined the US Air Force and served until honorably discharged in 1965.  Grant married Linda (Dew) Johnson on December 27, 1966, at Community Church of Palm Springs, with Dr. James Blackstone officiating.  They remained married for 58 years, having two children, Laura and Matthew.

Grant began working a summer job with California Water and Telephone in 1967.  He worked as an inside plant installer for several years before becoming a supervisor in that department. In 1986, he transferred to Thousand Oaks, where he helped write technical manuals. After two years, he became an engineer in Yucca Valley and then transferred to the Palm Springs Engineering office. He retired from GTE in 1993 after 25 years.  He then worked as an independent telecommunications contractor for several years.  His final job was at Ace Hardware in Miller, SD, where he flourished in his love of helping others.

He was a longtime member of the Community Church of Palm Springs, CA, and served as an Elder there. In later years, he and Linda attended Bethany Bible Church in Banning, CA.

He greatly enjoyed scouting. He was also a member of the Elks, Moose Lodge, and the American Legion.   Grant especially loved singing in choir, playing guitar, shooting pool, and woodworking. He was known for his love of music, his sense of humor, and his calm temperament.  His loyalty, optimism, and eye for detail will also be missed.

Remaining to cherish Grant’s memory are his wife, Linda; children, Laura and Matthew (Jennifer); and one granddaughter, Helen.

Preceding Grant in death are parents, Charles and Marguerite; brother, Donald; and sister, Charlene.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Grant’s arrangements.
