George Frederick Zachritz, 95, Wilsonville, OR, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Rembo Care Home, Wilsonville, OR.
A private burial was held at the Faulkton Cemetery with military honors.
George Fredrick Zachritz was born April 13, 1930, in Faulkton, SD to Dr. George F. and Clara (Roberts) Zachritz. He graduated from Faulkton High School in 1948.
George went to the University of SD till 1950 and majored in English. While there, he also played piano for some well-known territory dance bands. They wrote their own music. He enlisted in the Army from 1950 to 1951. He went back to college from 1951 to 1952 and also spent 12 weeks at ROTC Camp at McCoy, Wisconsin. From May 1952 until March 1954, he served in the US Army as 1st Lieutenant. He spent 13 months in Korea where he was in charge of about 30 men. He earned the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars and the combat infantry badge.
He moved to Seattle, WA in 1954. He worked for Boeing and various other companies. In 1966, he went to work for the City of Seattle Water Department and worked there for 29 years, retiring in 1995. He moved to Kent, WA in 2007, then to Wilsonville, OR in 2021 where he lived with his niece, Gloria Miller.
He enjoyed reading, trivia, playing cards, listening to jazz music and watching Seattle Seahawks football games. He went to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR for about 15 years. He travelled to Las Vegas, Paris, France, Victoria, Vancouver, BC and many of the United States. He took a cruise to Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Halifax Nova Scotia.
George never married.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his three nieces: Gloria Miller, Georgia (Gene) McCullough, and Virginia (Greg) Davidson; his cousins: Donna Koch and Jane Ahlberg; and many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Doris Wescott and Owen Zachritz.
