Arnold Zeigler, 79, of Seneca, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Faulkton Area Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2010 at the United Church of Faulkton with Pastor Paul Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Oakland Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation was held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 1, 2010 at the Luce Funeral Home in Faulkton with a 5:00 p.m. prayer service.

Arnold Joseph Zeigler was born September 4, 1930 at Hatfield’s Maternity Home in Seneca to Henry and Josephine (Higgs) Zeigler. He lived in northern Hyde County and attended Rice Lake School. While attending high school, Arnold played the trumpet in the Andy Sergeant Dance Band and the Johnny Red Big Eagle Band. He played Trumpet, Alto & Baritone Saxophone. In 1948 Arnold graduated from Highmore High School. Over the years Arnold always found time to play in the Zeigler Family Dance Band, Carmen’s Combo.

Following school, Arnold operated the Playhouse Theatre at Harrold where he met Lurantine “Laura” Bucholz whose family operated Harrold’s Café. They were married on April 11, 1951 in Hand County.

In November 1951, Arnold joined the United States Army serving until October of 1953, during the Korean War. He was a member of the 51st Signal Battalion I Corps, 8th Army, as a VHF radio operator and repairman. Laura joined him in Ft. Gordon, Georgia and they went on to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey where their son Wayne was born. When Arnold shipped out to Korea, Laura and Wayne returned home to the family in South Dakota.

Upon his return from Korea, Arnold joined his father on the farm until November of 1955 when the family moved to a farm southwest of Seneca which was purchased from Al Seibel.

Over the years Arnold served as a member of the Seneca School Board and the Ellisville Township Board, retiring in 2009. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #163 of Seneca, transferring his membership to the Faulkton Legion when the Seneca Legion closed, VFW Post #3179 of Faulkton and the IOOF Lodge #250 of Seneca. During his spare time Arnold also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing and listening to music, gardening and playing with his great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish Arnold’s life are his wife Laura of Seneca; son, Wayne of Seneca; grandson, Daryn and his wife Kari and their sons, Garrett and Treyson of Gettysburg; brothers, Lane of Highmore and Henry of Pierre; nephews, Carmen of Pierre, Lynn of Highmore and Dana of Rapid City and and sisters-in-law Ione Mashek of Highmore, RoseMary Bucholz of Lake Andes, Rose Bucholz of Seattle, WA, Reta Bucholz of Denver, CO, MaryAnn Bucholz of Missouri, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Arnold’s arrangements.
