Arthur Dean Hardie was born April 2, 1929, near Zell, SD to Edwin and Clara (Lingemann) Hardie. Art grew up on the family farm, attending rural grade school and the Catholic elementary boarding school in Zell before graduating from Redfield High School in 1947.  Following graduation, Art joined the SD National Guard and was stationed near Anchorage, AK, during the Korean Conflict. Following his deployment, Art returned to the Zell area.

On December 20, 1952, Art was united in marriage to Elaine Hagenlock in Aberdeen. They lived for a short time in Aberdeen, then they began farming for six years before establishing their own family farm near Seneca. Art and Elaine enjoyed following their children’s activities, taking trips in their motor home to almost all the continental U.S. states, a trip to Hawaii, spending winters in Arizona, Florida, Texas, and California; and staying active in the community playing golf, fishing, bowling, square dancing, and attending card parties. Art lost Elaine to pancreatic cancer on May 12, 1999.

Art was blessed and found his second love, Janice (Cutright) Hoffman, and they were married on July 27, 2001. Janice moved from her home in Oklahoma to join Art in Faulkton. Together they enjoyed traveling to Europe, Alaska, and many other destinations in the US and Canada, many times connecting with friends and relatives during their travels. They attended as many family and social activities as possible, always ready to witness a wedding, greet a new family member, or whatever the occasion was being celebrated! Art and Janice also loved to dance, and in the later years enjoyed a passion for a great game of cards.

Art was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Faulkton and also the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed a life-long love for farming which including growing crops and raising all types of livestock during his working career.  He continued his love for the farm during retirement with regular visits to the farm and provided a helping hand whenever he could throughout his life.

Survivors grateful to have shared in his life were his wife, Janice; children: Larry (Tedi) Hardie, Draper, UT, Nancy (John) Grunewaldt, Pierre, SD, Doyle (Donna) Hardie, Sioux Falls, SD and Gary (Leann) Hardie, Seneca, SD; step-children: Cynthia Stanley, Gainesville, TX, Janet Wood, Enid, OK and Kent Hoffman, El Reno, OK; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren;  four step grandchildren; four great step grandchildren; and sister; Crystal Jungwirth, Redfield, SD.

  21. Dear Janice, Nancy, Larry, Doyle, Gary and families,

We always enjoyed Art and Elaine's visits and in the later years his visits with Janice.
Mom loved reminiscing with him about their childhoods and time spent together. She was also thankful when on one of his visits he drove Clara and Theresa down from Oakland to spend a few days so there was a nice family gathering. It was always obvious that family was the world to him. We will miss him and hold him close in our hearts forever. Tom, Beth, Cathy, Patty and Mary
