August Fischer, 87, of Highmore, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2009 surrounded by his family at the home of Mike and Connie Konrad in Highmore.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Burial followed in the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 12, 2009 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Luze Funeral Home in Highmore.

August Herman Fischer was born July 26, 1922, in Faulk County, South Dakota to William and Caroline (Steensen) Fischer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On September 8, 1944, he was united in marriage to Delma Koch at Wolsey, South Dakota. To this union, three children were born: Carl, Darla, and Connie.

August and his family ranched in Valley Township in Hyde County for 45 years, retiring in 1991. He was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many. He served in the Marine Corps from June 1944 to October 1945. While serving, he was awarded the Purple Heart, along with numerous medals and citations. He served on the Valley School Board, Valley Township Board, and was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.

His hobbies included playing cards, square dancing, wintering in Arizona, fishing, camping, and vacationing with the grandchildren at Hanna Creek in the Black Hills. He was an active member of an Arizona shuffleboard team where he won numerous trophies. He always had time for you and was known for his kindness and sincere smile.

Delma, the love of his life for over 50 years, passed away on June 18, 1995. Later, August met another soul mate, Lois Scott, to share his life. On August 19, 1999, they were united in marriage in Vancouver, Canada and he was graciously accepted into her loving family.

His memory will be cherished by his wife, Lois of Vancouver, Canada; his three children: Carl (Anne) Fischer of Watertown, Darla (Dwaine) Kusser of Pierre, and Connie (Mike) Konrad of Highmore; 8 grandchildren: Amy, August Carl (Sheena), Alex, Kimberly, Chad (Jackie), Emily (Mark), John (Sara) and Sara; 5 great grandchildren: Seth, Grayson, Danny, Kadence, and Jada; and 1 brother: Chris of Gettysburg.

Waiting to greet him in heaven:, his wife, Delma; parents, William and Caroline; special parents-in-laws, Maude and Carl Koch; and brothers, Marvin and Wilfred.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with August's arrangements.
