Beatrice Adelia “Babe” Howard, 93, of Miller, passed away Monday, December 19, 2011 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 23, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Miller, with Pastor Mary Ann Sheldon officiating. Burial followed in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 22, 2011 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.

Beatrice was born January 14, 1918 to Chris and Adelia (Roenfeldt) Lanz at the family farm house north of St. Lawrence, South Dakota.  She attended grade school at York Township and later graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1936.  As a young lady, Babe excelled in public speaking, basketball, and softball.  After high school she worked in the Hand County Courthouse for five years.  She married I.T. (Pat) Howard, Jr. September 10, 1941 at Redfield, South Dakota.  They made their home in Greenleaf Township farming and ranching for 65 years.  Babe was very active in the operation and did all the record keeping for many years.

Babe was a member of Greenleaf United Methodist Church where she was active in the UMW and she kept the churches historical records.  Babe was a correspondent for the Miller Press for many years.  She enjoyed spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. Gardening, crocheting, embroidery, playing cards, baking, cooking, canning and reading were also some of her favorite past times.

Grateful to have shared in her life is her husband of 70 years, Pat Howard of Miller; two sons: Richard (Jane) Howard of Brookings and Terry (Marsha) Howard of Miller; five grandchildren: Lorelle (Clayton) Deuter of Mitchell, Rachelle (Chris) Engbrecht of Brookings, Chris (Amy) Howard of Miller, Jacque (Jeremiah) Story of Silverdale, WA and Lance (Abigail) Howard of Brookings; six great grandchildren: Jaden and Seth Deuter, Alana and Maya Howard, and Natalie and Landon Story; one sister, Lucile Williams of Grants Pass, OR; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings: Louis Lanz, Arthur Lanz, Laura Roth, and Lillie Jarmuth.

Memorials can be directed to the Greenleaf United Methodist Church of rural Miller.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Babe’s arrangements.
