Betty J. Hermann, 90, of Hoven, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Avera Oahe Manor, Gettysburg.
Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 3, 2022, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Hoven, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. A wake service will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 2, 2022, at the church.
Betty Jane Kilian was born July 16, 1931, the third child of Harry and Nora (Paulson) Kilian, in Gettysburg, SD. The family lived on a farm northeast of Gettysburg, and she received her education from Gettysburg High School, graduating in 1949.
On August 5, 1950, Betty was united in marriage to Willard “Bill” Hermann in Clear Lake, SD. They lived for a short time in the Clear Lake area until returning to Potter County, living in several areas. Betty worked at the Sale Barn Café, along with her mother, until taking it over in later years. She also worked as a dietician for Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven and was well known as the babysitter for the town of Hoven.
Betty enjoyed being a seamstress, making many of her children’s clothes, prom dresses and bridesmaids dresses. If not making garments, Betty enjoyed sewing crafts. She made many cats, dogs, bunnies, and Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. In her spare time, she enjoyed camping, fishing, working in her flower gardens, or spit shining any vehicle she was around!
Betty’s life will be cherished by her husband, Bill of Hoven; her children: Bob (Mary) of Nowthen, MN, Ginny (Aryln) Minnerath, Hoven, Joy Penrod, Gettysburg, Lynn (Donnie) Karst, Hoven, and Ed (Naomi), Gettysburg; grandchildren: Kelly Herman, Nickie (Jeff) LaBeau, Brad (Katie) Frost, John C. (Joan) Umiker, Angie Fillaus (Jeremy Anderson), Jeremy (Jodi) Penrod, Jodie Karst, Brooke (Tyler) Ulrich, Paige (George) Sperry, Megan and Sage Hermann, Cody (Michelle) Minnerath, Jenny (Don) Litzen and Lynelle (Pat) Dwyer; great grandchildren: Rocky and Jasmine LaBeau, Morgan and Kolten Frost, JJ and Jake Umiker, Gracie Ann, Bella, and Wyatt Fillaus, Madie Penrod, Tyler and Kaitlynn Rudebusch, Jayden Karst, Kayl, Kemry, and Kaden Ulrich, Crue and Hazley Sperry; and three sisters-in-law: June, Carletta, and Pat Kilian.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Billy Hermann; son-in-law, Rich Penrod; grandson, Travis “Trapper” Karst; brothers: Leo, Keith, Loren, Jr., and Mickey Kilian; and sisters: Lorraine Erickson and Norita White.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Betty’s arrangements.




My deepest condolences to Betty’s family. She was like a second Mom as I was growing up and she made such good cakes. I hope the wonderful memories continue and bring you peace.
