Betty Marie Beranek was born in Ree Heights on October 14, 1932 to Charles William and Bessie Katherine (Miller) Beranek. She attended school in Ree Heights, graduating in 1950. During high school, she was an avid basketball player. She met the love of her life, Lamont Kopecky and married him on June 16, 1950. They lived on a farm in northwestern Hand County. They had two children, Terry, born July 16, 1951 and Carol, born October 4, 1953. Betty and Lamont loved to dance. Lamont died in December of 1978 and Betty moved to Miller five years later. She worked as a teacher’s aid for the Miller School for twenty-one years, first in Ree Heights and then in Miller where she joyfully taught the children of each community. She loved teaching and working with the kids.
She was a devoted piano teacher and enjoyed helping her students learn how to play piano. Betty played for weddings and helped numerous children with their solos. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, gardening, having coffee with all of her friends and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. Betty loved watching her children and grandchildren play softball. Her greatest love was the time she spent with her great grandchildren; they truly lit up her life.
She is now at peace and resting with the love of her life.
Betty’s life will be remembered by her son, Terry (Deb) Kopecky of Harrisburg and daughter, Carol (Terry) Witte of Orient; grandchildren: Brent (Dawn) Witte, Stephanie (Nick Wranek) Kopecky, Sheila (Tim) Hargens, Tina (Marc) Peterson, Brad (Heather) Kopecky; 10 great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; one sister, Ellen Sparks of La Grande, OR; and one sister-in-law, Linda (Junior) Schmidt of Faulkton.
