Bret T. Bloomenrader, 70, of Highmore, peacefully passed away Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Highmore Health.

Celebration of Life will be 10:30 a.m, Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the Hyde County Memorial Auditorium in Highmore, with Roger Day leading the service.

Bret Thomas Bloomenrader was born in Pierre, SD on February 22, 1953, to Virginia (Hartshorn) and Leon Bloomenrader.  Bret moved to California after graduating from Highmore High School in 1971 and enjoyed big city (hippie) life for a while. He eventually made his way back to South Dakota, working in Sioux City, Iowa at a packing plant. After several years, he moved back to Highmore to work on the Bloomenrader Ranch.

Bret had a soft spot for animals, which anyone who saw him with his cats and dogs over the years could verify. He also had his favorites among “his girls” in the pasture and gave them names and could tell you who was a good mom and who was not so much. He was glad to be a part of the Highmore ranching/agricultural community and appreciated the special relationships with the families in the area. He enjoyed his frequent visits to Mac’s Corner to keep up on all the local happenings.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy; brother, Scott (Karen); brother-in-law and best friends, Dale Kiepke and Brendan Gallagher; sister-in-law, Carla Bloomenrader; numerous nieces and nephews; and all his cattle working friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Judy, Dennis, and Ricki.

A special thank you goes to Cody Bloomenrader for his care, help, and kindness for Bret in his final months.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Bret’s arrangements.

A Memorial Service was held on December 9, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Hyde County Auditorium, 125 2 St SW in Highmore, SD 57345

Guestbook

  1. So sorry. Too young that's for sure. I always enjoyed visiting with him.

  2. Bret was a good friend from the time we met in high school.  After high school, when I started at USD, Bret came to Vermillion too.  He experienced all the fun of college from partying to coeds to life’s lessons but without that pesky tuition. So long old friend.

  3. To all the family you have my sincerest condolences

  4. Wendy, I’m unable to come in person but I’m sending you a big hug. May he rest in peace and may God be with you in the days ahead.

    Mary  and the Knippling Krew.

  5. So long old buddy. Same as Kent. Too soon, too soon.
