Corinne Aasby

October 31, 1935 ~ December 1, 2025

Born in: Pierre, South Dakota
Resided in: Highmore, South Dakota

Corinne “Creenie” Aasby, 90, left all of her mortal worries behind on the 1st of December 2025 at the Faulkton Healthcare Center.  She was surrounded by the love, care, and thoughts of her large, extended family as well as her many friends.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 5, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Highmore.  Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Harrold.  A visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by a time of sharing at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2025, all at the church. A lunch will follow Mass at the Hyde County Memorial Auditorium.

Corinne was born in Pierre, SD, on Halloween in 1935, the second child of LaVerne “Sam” and Edna (Cowan) Gregg.  In all, Edna and Sam raised seven children in the Harrold, SD area.  Corinne married Donald Keith Aasby in St. John’s Catholic Church on April 24, 1954.  To that marriage, eight children were born.

Corinne and Keith moved several times during their early years of marriage, but eventually settled in the “Pocket” (south of Harrold, SD) at the Hanson farmstead, where they remained for 15 years.  Events required a move to Highmore, SD, in 1973 when Keith began work at the Jennings-Cowan cattle operation.  As age took its toll, they transitioned to the additional care provided by the Faulkton Healthcare Center in 2023, where Corinne finally succumbed to her health issues.  An interesting fact: Corinne always maintained the spelling of her name as seen here.  However, her birth certificate spells it as “Corrine.”

Corinne was an excellent seamstress and a master at reupholstering and refinishing furniture.  During farming and harvesting times, she put on three meals a day ¾ not only for her own large and expanding family, but for all those helping with the farmwork.  Corinne was a dietary aid at the Highmore Nursing Home for many years and at the Highmore School Cafeteria.  She also cared for her grandfather, “Boots” Gregg, during his final years and would always step in to help anyone in need.  She enjoyed her yard and gardening.  In her scant leisure time, she enjoyed playing a (card) game of “500” with family and friends.

She is survived by sister, Betty Ann (Marty) Wortman; brothers: Dick (Connie) and Ken (Marge) Gregg; daughters: Audrey (Marc) Miller with children, Kelly (Reno) Marquardt, and Clint (Christine) Miller; Pam (Don) Mandelko with sons, Paul (Rachel) Mandelko, Tyler (Kelly) Mandelko, and Weston Mandelko; Amy (Scot) Benson with sons, Brody (Taylar) Benson and Brandon (Fallon) Benson; Angie (Shane) Kolb with stepsons, Justin (Katrina) Kolb and Wil (Paige) Kolb; Dixie Aasby with children, Payton (Michaela) Mewes, Spencer (Jessica) Mewes, and Brittany (Luke) Arrowood; and Joey (Jason) Pekarek with children, Taylor (Gabe) Ware and Matthew (Jami) Pekarek; sons, Kent (Sonia) Aasby and Ben Aasby; 18 great-grandchildren along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who would require their own, standalone book to mention.

Corinne was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Kathleen Gregg and Patty (Jerald) Thorn; brother, Merrill (Pat) Gregg; and beloved granddaughter, Nicole Pekarek.

All donations to the family will be divided between the Highmore Senior Center, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

As Corinne always said, “Cheerio!”

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Corrine’s arrangements.
