Darlene Campbell, 87, of Miller, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, SD.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller, SD, with Rev. Brian Jones officiating.  Burial followed at the Wessington Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, April 25, 2011 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Reck Funeral Home in Miller, SD.

Darlene Lois Larson was born Sept. 7, 1923 to Charles and Vivian (Tipton) Larson in Nance Township near Wessington, S. D.  She attended country school and graduated from Wessington High School.  Following graduation, she pursued a teaching career and graduated from Wessington Springs College.  She taught at Whiteside School and Sand Creek School.

She married Dean Rowen on July 19, 1945.  They lived in Vayland and Wessington, SD.  Dean died on Oct 10, 1959.  Darlene then taught school in Wessington and also worked at the post office in Wessington.

She married Marion "Tink" Campbell on Oct. 2, 1971.  They lived in Howard and Ree Heights, SD, where she worked at the elevator with Marion.  Marion died on May 27, 1982.

Darlene moved to the Arms Apartments in Miller in 1993 where she thoroughly enjoyed the card games and socializing with her friends there.

She is survived by two sons: Monte (Mary) Rowen of Aberdeen and Randy (Pat) Rowen of Omaha, NE; stepchildren: George (Val) Campbell of Australia, Janice Campbell of Rapid City, Kathy Kennedy of Rapid City, Laurel (Gary) Smith of Hot Springs, and Kyla Campbell of Rapid City; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Wilburn, Willard "Ole", Delbert, and Delton; and her twin sister, Arlene; both husbands; and her daughter, Cindy.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Darlene’s arrangements.

  1. Monty, Randy & families- For some reason I was thinking of Darlene a lot this week. Couldn’t believe when I saw that she had passed. Please accept my condolences. Darlene was a special person and a good friend.

  3. So sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. We were friends w/her & Marion when they lived in Howard. She was a circle member in the Meth.church. Cindy was friends w/Rhonda & Kyla knew Teresa & Brenda. Bohr’s always kept us posted on Darlene. We will have prayers for your family in church on Sunday. She was a beautiful woman. God bless her memory.

  5. Kathy and Family, So sorry to hear of your step-mother’s passing. May God comfort you at this time and in the days to come.
