Darrell Johnson, 76, of Faulkton, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Memorial services will be 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2021 at the United Church of Faulkton with Pastor Thomas Sumers presiding. A service will be held at a later date in Iowa.

Darrell Elroy Johnson was born December 9, 1944 in LeMars, IA to Verner and Gladys (Swanson) Johnson. He graduated from Marcus High School in 1962 and went on to study animal science at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM.

On March 24, 1968, Darrell married Roberta Nitsch. Together they had two children, Brandon and Farrah. Darrell developed a feed program at a dairy in Hatch, NM.

He worked hard his whole life for his family and enjoyed staying busy. He was a farmer, over the road trucker and an owner/operator of a restaurant.

On March 16, 1996, he was united in marriage to Nora (Tavenner) Whaley in Faulkton, SD. He welcomed her children, Shelli and Anggie. Together, Nora and Darrell ran the 212 Café until 2016 when he retired due to health reasons.

During Darrell’s free time he was sure to find time to be with family. He thoroughly enjoyed every minute he was able to spend with his children and grandchildren. He loved the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and gardening. He was also an avid reader, a great trumpet player and a wonderful singer, especially singing opera or any bass part. Most of all, his family and community will remember Darrell as a jokester as he loved giving everyone a little bit of a hard time just to be rewarded with a smile.

Darrell’s life will be cherished by his wife, Nora of Faulkton; children: Brandon (Kerri) Johnson, Watertown, Farrah (Lonnie) Mahrt, Plankinton, Shelli (James) Bowman, Henderson, CO, and Anggie (Paul) Velasquez, Golden, CO; grandchildren: Jaina and Allana Johnson, Morgen, Edana, and Nyomi Mahrt, JJ and Jennifer Andrews, and Shaydon Velasquez; great grandchildren, Grace and Randy Ebert; brother, Verdell Johnson, Cleghorn, IA, and his mother-in-law, Virginia Tavenner, Henderson, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joy Vogel; brother-in-law, Marvin Vogel; sister-in-law, Marian Johnson; and father-in-law, Russ Tavenner.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Darrell’s arrangements.

A Memorial Service was held on January 7, 2021 at 7:00 PM at United Church of Faulkton, 1011 St. John St. in Faulkton, SD 57438
