De Vere Tobin, 88, of Gettysburg, passed away, Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the Avera Gettysburg Hospital.


Funeral service were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Jeff Adel officiating. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday September 18, 2013 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.


Leland “De Vere” Tobin was born May 10, 1925 in Gettysburg, South Dakota to William and Irene (Hurley) Tobin.  De Vere was raised on a farm five miles south of Gettysburg by his uncle, Vic Hurley and grandmother, Mabel Hurley.  He attended country school three miles west of the farm where he was raised. On November 2, 1945, De Vere married Dorathy Cooper and to this union five children were born: Ronald, Ralph, Randy, and twins, Robert and Rodney.  De Vere and Dorathy made their home in Gettysburg raising their children until 1972 when they moved back to the farm.  De Vere spent his entire life in Gettysburg doing what he loved, farming.


De Vere volunteered time serving with the local fire department. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.  De Vere also enjoyed baking homemade pies, angel food cakes and divinity; and sharing them with his many friends.    


Grateful to have shared in his life is his wife of 68 years, Dorathy Tobin of Gettysburg; five sons: Ronald (Rebecca) Tobin of Gettysburg, Ralph (Eileen) Tobin of Parkston, Randy (Penny) Tobin of Kempner, TX, Robert (Myra) Tobin of Omaha, NE, and Rodney (Debby) Tobin of Kranzburg, SD; 14 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.


He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; two grandsons; and one great-great grandson.


Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with De Vere’s arrangements.

  1. Our family sends most gracious prayers to you. Wish we could have made it to the funeral. DeVere was a close relative. Tears come to my eyes when I heard of his passing. We have the fondest memories. Bruce, Connie, Virginia, Natalie and Mark Tobin.

  8. We are blessed to have children at the school where Major Tobin taught, and to be able to talk to him about Gettysburg! My husband’s family knew his family all their lives, and DeVere’s heritage continues through his son and I’m sure all his family. Our condolences to you all!
