Deveron Bruce His Law was the first born son of Teresa M. Howe and Randolph B. His Law on February 1, 1977, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, South Dakota.

Growing up, he spent a lot of his time between both Fort Thompson and Big Bend areas. He was an adventurous little boy who was never afraid to try something new or make new friends. Riding bikes down to the boat docks in the summertime, sledding down the big hills in winter, fishing in all the good fishing spots, shooting BB guns, hunting, playing basketball, and breakdancing were some of his favorite pastimes, but any kind of outdoor activities, he was sure to be there.

Deveron attended elementary school at the community school in Big Bend and attended Chamberlain and Harrold, graduating 8th grade from Harrold, SD. Basketball was always one of his favorite sports. He played in his younger years and through high school. Deveron attended Crow Creek High School in Stephan, South Dakota until he graduated in 1995.

Deveron welcomed his only son, Judson Rhee Dannen His Law, on September 4, 1994, with Jolee Two Dogs. After graduating, Deveron moved to Marty, South Dakota. He welcomed his daughter, Tori Rose, on April 18, 1995, and the twins, Audrey Rose, and Rozee Rose on Christmas Day in 2003, with Gina Drapeau.

While living in Marty, he worked at CR Industries in Springfield, South Dakota until it’s closing. He was then employed with the Fort Randall Casino as a poker/blackjack dealer. Upon returning home, Dev worked at the LodeStar Casino also as a blackjack dealer. A job he enjoyed but found his true calling working for, was being a special education paraprofessional at the Crow Creek Tribal Schools. He grew a very special bond with Bryant, a student whom he followed for all of the years he was employed there. He left this job after 10 plus years, however he never forgot any of the kids that he ran into, always remembering their names.

Deveron met Autumn Augustine in 2010 and they spent the rest of his life together. To this union, they welcomed their daughter, Ruby Rose, on September 17, 2013. She was daddy's little girl.  He followed her everywhere, school and at home. She had him wrapped around her finger, all the way until the very end Ruby never left her dad's side.

Dev enjoyed being around family and friends more than anything, always wanting to go visiting so he could have a conversation with anyone and everyone that crossed his path. You could always find him watching sports or hunting shows, whispering the whole time as if the deer could hear him. He loved music, he was never picky and would listen to anything, but loved his oldies and Bob Marley. He didn't always know the words, but he would “try” to hit every note. It never failed, Dev had a story that went with every song he played or a person the song reminded him of.

He loved playing horseshoes in the spring and summer with friends and family, sometimes playing late into the night with the headlights from the car to light the pit. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, but as the years went by he would say, “I better let the young ones take over, before I shoot all of the king kong bucks.”

Deveron’s favorite pastime was taking a long slow cruise along the river, he loved being by the river, and he seemed more at peace driving down the dirt roads of “the pocket”. He knew the road like the back of his hand, he truly could drive it with his eyes closed. “These are my lands!” was his saying every time.

Deveron’s sense of humor and his witty remarks are definitely going to be missed, especially in serious times, such as these. He was always the one to crack a joke and lighten the mood, Deveron had a great aura about him.  He would do whatever he needed to do to make you feel comfortable. He was a good listener and a good shoulder to cry on. He knew how to make you laugh and forget about the moment. Deveron was a great friend to have on your side. He was always on a personal level with everyone. He always had a story to share, a quick joke to tell (sometimes at the expense of others), but that's just how he was. The real ones knew his sense of humor. The sound of his laughter will be missed by everyone. Dev was truly one of a kind!

The impact that he made in everyone's lives will live on, no matter how big or small. If you knew him for years or a brief moment, you have a story or a favorite memory that you could share about him and that we all will never forget. After all, that's what he said he wanted, to be remembered for all of the good times.  He will never be forgotten.

  1. Marquetta Cadwell Witt says:

With my deepest sympathy for the family of Deveron, my nephew. I am so heartbroken, for his children, grandchildren, his mother, my friend Teresa, my brother and sister, Randy and Melody and his sister Birdy. Prayers for you all.

  2. I am sorry to read of Deverons passing. He was a student of mine many years ago. I remember his quick wit and smile. I didn’t know he was at Highmore Health.

  3. I’m very sorry to hear about Deveron’s passing. I met him in 1994, when I visited Crow Creek with some students from my high school. I talked to him in the school one day, and I remember him very vividly laughing and cracking jokes. I’ve fondly remembered him all of these years; I was happy to have met him.
