Donald Grey Owl

Donald Lawrence Grey Owl, 88, of Stephan, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2022, at his home.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2022, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Fort Thompson, Father Christianus Hendrik, celebrant. Burial will follow at the Immaculate Conception Mission Cemetery, Stephan. A wake service will be 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 8, 2022, at the church, Father Jean Claude Mbassi, officiating, with a procession starting at 4:00 p.m from Luze Funeral Home, Highmore.

Donald was born at the Fort Thompson Hospital on April 1, 1934, to John P. Grey Owl and Sophie (Touch the Earth) Grey Owl.  He attended school at the Immaculate Conception Mission School in Stephan, South Dakota.  After school, Donald enlisted in the United States Army before coming back and working as a farm hand around the area. 

He was a simple man; he loved to laugh and joke around with everyone whenever he could.

Donald is survived by one brother, Melvin (Victoria) Grey Owl; all his nieces and nephews; and numerous family and friends who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters; and his lifelong partner, Rose Big Eagle.
